MoI Urges Staff Members and Public to vote For Child Protection Center at WSIS Project Prize 2014

The Ministry of Interior has urged staff members across over the various police sectors at the countrywide level, as well as all segments of society, especially parents, families, educators, and all stakeholders and individuals interested in the technical aspects of child protection to vote in favor of the MoI’s Child Protection Center at the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) Awards for 2014. The center has been nominated for two projects that have been listed among the final nominees for the WSIS Project Prize 2014. Both projects have successfully passed the first and second levels of the qualification rounds, among a total of 10 participating projects that are representing the UAE in the competition. The Ministry of Interior also explained that the 17th   April 2014 is the deadline for completing the electronic voting, which is open for everyone all over the world.

Lieutenant General Saif Abdullah Al Sha’far, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Interior, noted that the UAE's prestigious initiatives and unwavering efforts are worthy of  support and  appreciation, notably because they allowed the UAE to stand out  on the international level and to compete in events of the magnitude of the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) Awards for 2014.

He added: "Child protection is everyone's responsibility; hence, the public's participation by casting their votes will be crucial in supporting the UAE’s eight projects that have made it through to the final stages, as well as the MoI’s Child Protection Center’s projects; the HEMAYATI Application and its smart services for the family, and the organization of the fifth Virtual Global Taskforce (VGT) Conference in Abu Dhabi."

In a statement distributed by the ministry to its staff members, the Undersecretary at the Ministry of Interior reiterated the importance of voting having reached the final stages, noting that the winning projects will be referred to in the future as Emirati experiments that were pioneering projects internationally; this will significantly enhance the UAE’s stature among the most advanced countries in the world, and transform the UAE into a knowledge economy and society.

Lieutenant General Al Sha’far added that the ministry’s staff and community members can log onto the MoI Child Protection Center's website and follow the listed steps to cast their votes for the center and for the nominated UAE projects by clicking on the following link:  http://www.moi-cpc.gov.ae. He also pointed to the adopted procedures to facilitate the voting mechanisms through the MoI’s Child Protection Center’s profiles @SafeChildUAE, on the social networking sites Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The participating projects that are representing the UAE in the competition reflect the strategic development references inspired by the 2021 UAE Vision and the UAE government’s strategy. They also reassert  the scientific approach used in carrying out benchmarking processes of developed services and projects, which reflects the strategic planning involved in developing these projects and services with a view to achieving a common  goal; namely: “improve the  competitiveness of the UAE.”

For his part, Major General Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Chairman of the Higher Committee for Child Protection and the UAE representative at the Virtual Global Taskforce Conference, called upon the public to vote in favor of the MoI’s Child Protection Center and the nominated UAE projects that have made it through to the nomination phase of the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) WSIS Project Prizes 2014.  He also explained that the 10 Emirati projects that have successfully made it through to the final stages of the WSIS Project Prizes 2014 are proof of the UAE’s leading status and an addition to its myriad achievements. “This accomplishment has been brought to fruition thanks to the work teams that have doubled the efforts in record time, fuelled by an unstinting support of the country’s leadership and the efforts of the Ministry of Interior's employees. With these achievements, the Ministry of Interior is credited with being the first ministry of interior worldwide to make sustainable gains for the country and its citizens,” continued Major General Al Nuaimi.

Adding further, he said: "The strenuous efforts of work teams at the Ministry of Interior and the different government sectors are inspired by the leadership’s enlightened visions, which pave the way towards more leadership and greater success. These glowing and iconic coveted achievements are designed to serve the community, especially families and children, in line with a continuous struggle towards further development and modernization, to maintain the well-deserved gains."

 Building and enhancing confidence

For his part, Lieutenant Colonel Faisal Mohammed Al Shammari, Director of the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Center, said: “The Center is participating in the competition under the fifth category, which is related to “Building confidence and security in the use of ICTs”. For this category, the Child Protection Center has submitted the Smartphone application “Hemayati”. The Child Protection Center is also participating under the 18th category that is concerned with “International and regional cooperation” with the project: “The 5th Biennial Virtual Global Taskforce (VGT) Conference”, under the theme “Combating Online Sexual Exploitation of Children with International Cooperation as an Enabler of Protection”. He also stressed the MoI Child Protection Center’s commitment to enhance cooperation with media entities in the UAE, to promote the crime prevention culture to protect children against potential crimes and to help strengthen society by implementing international best practices, with a view to maintaining the safety and security of families and children.

He also noted that the “Hemayati” application was recently launched by the Ministry of Interior following the instructions of the higher leadership, to enable parents and families in general to keep track of their children’s whereabouts. It also allows parents to communicate with their children at all times, in addition to providing a built-in SOS feature, enabling children to send distress calls to their parents when they feel  threatened. The application can be downloaded for free on Smartphones. It can only be activated by parents in order to determine their children’s whereabouts should they go missing.

The Ministry of Interior has launched the HEMAYATI Application for free on the App Store follows the center’s previous success in launching the application on Google Play for Smartphones operating via Android System. It also personifies the Ministry of Interior's efforts of developing smart interactive services via mobile phones.

The Security Media Department urges the public to vote

The Security Media Department at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior has urged the public and those interested to vote extensively for the MoI’s Child Protection Center and the UAE’s shortlisted projects that have made it through the first round of the competition, after selection by the Experts Group and arbitration committee of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). It indicated that, according to the regulations, public voting is crucial to enhance the projects’ chances of reaching the second and final round, according to the percentage of votes in each category of the award.

The Security Media Department also confirmed that the submitted projects are receiving votes from all over the world. The importance of voting will be seen when the winning projects are referred to in the future as Emirati experiments that were pioneering projects internationally; this will significantly enhance the UAE’s stature  among the most advanced countries in the world, and transform the UAE into a knowledge economy and society
