Ramadan Tournament Kicks off at Abu Dhabi Civil Defense Operations Department

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, July 10th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

The Operations Department at the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense General Directorate, organized a set of sports competitions as part of the First Ramadan Tournament. The tournament includes football competitions, volleyball competitions, tug of war, and civil defense officers’ challenge. 12 teams will be taking part in the football competitions, 5 teams in the volleyball competitions, 5 teams in the tug of war competitions, and 12 participants in civil defense officers’ challenge. The participating teams represent the various civil defense stations in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Colonel Juma Salem Al Dahmani, Acting Director of Abu Dhabi Civil Defense attended the opening ceremony, along with Colonel Abdullah Rashid Al Zaabi, Head of Strategy and Performance Development Department; Lt. Colonel Hamad Saeed Al Riyami, Director of Abu Dhabi Civil Defense Stations Department; Lieutenant Colonel Tariq Saleh Al Shareef, Head of Operations Department; and a number of officers, non-commissioned officers, and constables from the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense General Directorate.

The ceremony started with the National Anthem and recitations from the Holy Quran, followed by a fireworks show. After that Colonel Al Dahmani inaugurated the tournaments with a speech, by which he expressed his thanks to the Operations Department for the good level of organization. He also noted that the tournaments aim to foster cooperation, brotherly bonds, and amity amongst all civil defense workers, as well as promote an atmosphere of fair competition. Colonel Al Dahmani concluded his speech wishing all participants the best luck and success, then shook hands with the players of both teams.

In his speech at the opening event, Lieutenant Colonel Tariq Al Shareef, Head of the Organizing Committee, indicated that the main goal of the tournaments is not winning or losing. “These tournaments are mainly designed to bring civil defense staff members together under the umbrella of sports, within fair competitions, that serve noble objectives and reflect positively on the performance of civil defense staff members. This also helps develop work mechanisms, and improve staff members’ physical fitness, in order to achieve public interest.” Concluding, Colonel Al Shareef thanked the Civil Defense Stations for their cooperation and contribution to the success of the tournaments.

Following the opening speeches, the tournament’s competitions started. Three football matches were played; the first match between the Operations and BaniYas Teams resulted in a draw; in the second match, the Al Musaffah 33 Team won against Al Bateen Team 2/6; and in the third match Al Shamkha Team won against Zayed Port (Mina Zayed) Team 2/0. In volleyball competitions, Al Qubesat Team won against the Operations Team 2/0, while the BaniYas Team won against Al Musaffah 33 Team 2/1. On the second day of the competitions, Al Musaffah 33 Team won against the Operations Team 2/0.

In the Civil Defense Officers Challenges, First Lieutenant Mohammed Al Menhali defeated First Lieutenant Ali Farhan Al Otaibi as the fastest civil defense officer to put on the full firefighting gear, completing the task in one minute and thirty-six seconds.

The competitions will continue throughout next week to determine the eligible teams for the finals.
