Attracted More than 950 Members

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Tuesday, September 16th 2014 [ME NewsWire]
The Cultural and Social Activities Section of the Clubs Department at the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ organized a symposium titled “Desert Sports: Entertainment or Risk” on Monday morning at the Police Schools Department Headquarters in Suwaihan. The seminar falls within the framework of the “Thaqafati” (My education) program organized by the Clubs Department, and was attended by 950 staff members from the Ministry of Interior (MoI) and Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters. This event was organized in collaboration with Emirates Driving Company and featured significant attendance from a number of businesses related to sports equipment and desert quad bikes; head of departments, chiefs of sections and branch managers.

Colonel Hareb Mugheer Al Khaili, Deputy Head of the Clubs Department at Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, stressed on the department’s commitment to improve staff members’ cultural and social skills and boosting their awareness about the risks associated with negative behaviors in everyday life environment. This is achieved via a number of cultural, social, and sport programs and events.

He also indicated that the “Desert Sports: Entertainment or Risk” falls within the framework of the “Thaqafati” program launched by the Clubs Department. This program aims to reduce work-related and life pressure, and to boost awareness levels. He also explained that during the seminar, a number of youngsters gave a touching testimony about the serious accidents they sustained and caused their disability.

Additionally, Colonel Al Khaili said that the seminar aims to spread awareness among desert sports enthusiasts, especially quad bike riders, with the desert sports season drawing near in the coming months.  He also reiterated the UAE endeavor to be on par with the world’s leading countries in terms of safety and security, as stipulated by the MoI’s Vision.

During the seminar, the participants discussed the various safety and prevention means to curtail desert sports’ accidents and allow people to practice their favorite hobbies safely. Colonel Al Khaili added that there are no specific causes for desert accidents; however, some of the reasons include over speeding or failure to maintain a safe distance.

Furthermore, Colonel Al Khaili pointed out that the seminar’s main objective is to help people avoid any accidents related to desert sports. “There are multiple causes for these accidents, such as the absence of clear driving rules and traffic signals in the desert; in addition to the lack of awareness of some sports enthusiasts regarding both safe driving skills and safety and security requirements,” he said.

Two MoI staff members gave their testimony, and told the story behind their physical disability, which they sustained due to their lack of awareness about  safe driving skills  and for failing to observe safety precautions while practicing their hobby. Some sports enthusiasts are oblivious of the critical importance of maintaining a safe distance between bikes. Most of them do not know their way through the desert and are only interested in an adrenaline rush adventure; which makes them vulnerable to serious injury and even death.

In conclusion, Colonel Al Khaili called upon all young MoI and Abu Dhabi Police staff members who are desert sports enthusiasts to observe all necessary safety and prevention requirements while practicing their hobbies. He also urged them to avoid performing dangerous road stunts that may result in serious accidents.
