Abu Dhabi Traffic Advises Against Overloading School Buses

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Monday, September 8th 2014 [ME NewsWire]
The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police called upon schools and institutions that transport students not to overload the buses and to adhere to the permitted numbers of students allowed. The directorate also urged them to ensure that every student is seated on separate seats. It also stressed on intensifying traffic control and imposing fines on overloaded buses.
Additionally, the directorate appealed to the schools and institutions of the need to ensure safety by checking the mechanics of their buses and by providing them with safety procedures. These requirements fall within the framework of the campaign ‘Their Safety is Our Concern’ which was launched at the Al Dhabyania Private School yesterday, Sunday, by the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate. The campaign aims to promote road safety for students during the new academic year and to reduce the causes that lead to traffic accidents involving students.
Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, said, “The campaign and the Ministry of Interior (MoI) aim to involve all segments of society in order to strengthen the roles of the schools, parents, educational bodies, administrations, and school bus drivers in the provision of traffic safety for students during the new academic year.”
This announcement came during the ceremony that the Saaed Society to Reduce Traffic Accidents organized at the Al Dhabyania Private School. The ceremony was attended by Mohammed Salem Al Dhaheri, ADEC's Executive Director of School Operations.
Brigadier Eng. Al Harithi highlighted the importance of the strategic partnership between the Abu Dhabi Police and the Abu Dhabi Education Council.  He said, “Traffic safety is not the responsibility of one entity, but is a rather integrated process. The family is responsible for taking care of their children and for protecting them from being exposed to traffic accidents.  The school is responsible for promoting a culture of traffic awareness. Drivers are responsible for paying attention while on the road and need to pay attention for students who are frequently on the road, as they are in school in the morning and afternoon.”
Furthermore, Brigadier Eng. Al Harithi indicated that the Abu Dhabi Police have prepared a comprehensive plan to provide traffic safety for students during the new academic year. The new plan includes intensifying traffic patrols in congested areas near schools in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Western Region, Al Gharbia.  He also urged parents who drive their children to school to avoid randomly parking in front of the schools, as this causes traffic jams.
Brigadier Eng. Al Harithi said, “The Traffic and Patrols Directorate has deployed more than 140 traffic patrols at the various intersections and on the internal and external roads, in addition to traffic monitors in various regions of Abu Dhabi.” He continued, “These steps are to enhance the safety of students and road users, and is within the framework of the ‘Their Safety is Our Concern’ campaign and of the police’s commitment to ensure the safety of students and a smooth flow of traffic in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Western Region (Al Gharbia).  The ‘Tathqeef’ education patrols are additionally exerting great efforts to contribute to the safety of students and have reduced the causes that lead to traffic accidents.”
Brigadier Eng. Al Harithi toured Al Dhabyania Private School and visited the classes to congratulate the students for the new academic year. He stressed the keenness of Abu Dhabi Police to provide safety and prevent any traffic accidents that students may be exposed to. He urged students to follow the ‘Golden Rule’ for using school buses. “The ‘Golden Rule’ involves moving 10 steps ahead of the bus upon exiting, and to avoid bending down near the bus without the driver’s knowledge,” he explained. Brigadier Eng. Al Harithi presented gifts with traffic awareness insignia to the students that included school bags and leaflets.
Concluding, Brigadier Eng. Al Harithi stressed the importance of providing male and female bus supervisors on each bus in order to supervise the children as they enter and exit the bus in safe areas near their homes. He also asserted that students should avoid getting on and off the bus far from their homes, or on the opposite side of the street from where they live- as crossing the street will expose them to traffic accidents.
