LONDON - Tuesday, October 7th 2014 [ME NewsWire]
(BUSINESS
WIRE) -- Smartmatic, the world’s number one voting technology and
services company, has successfully implemented a fully verifiable
electronic voting solution in Bulgaria for its Parliamentary elections
held on 5th October.
“With these comprehensive pilots, we are paving
the way for a full implementation of electronic voting in Bulgaria. We
have no doubt this technology offers multiple benefits - not only for us
in the electoral commission, but to the country as a whole,” stated
Maria Musorlieva, Deputy Chairwoman of Bulgaria’s Central Electoral
Commission (CEC).
Following on a commitment to modernize Bulgaria’s
elections, and having executed the first electronic pilot last May,
Bulgaria's Central Electoral Commission called upon Smartmatic for a
second time.
For the Parliamentary elections, the
London-headquartered company provided a tailored voting solution
comprised of touch-screen voting machines, software applications, and
field-tested project management tools. Besides touch-screen voting
machines, Bulgarians also had the chance to try other technologies like
ballot counting devices to process votes cast on paper.
Smartmatic set up 300 polling booths distributed across five Bulgarian cities: Sofia, Plovdiv, Pleven, Kustendil and Pernik.
Commenting
on the election, Antonio Mugica, CEO of Smartmatic said: “We are
delighted that the Bulgarian authorities recognised Smartmatic as the
right partner for this project and that they are taking a leading role
in Europe for electronic voting initiatives. We hope to see greater
adoption of our technologies throughout Europe and beyond.”
In an
effort to guarantee an independent and confidential vote for all, each
voting machine was fitted with a device that supports voters with visual
disabilities. This innovative audio visual voting interface allows
voters to navigate the ballot, access the candidate list, select
candidates, and finalise the entire voting process independently.
