Al Muhairi: Instilling International Best Concepts in Police Work

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Monday, May 11th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

The Abu Dhabi Police, represented by Social Support Centers Department, and in cooperation with the ICT Department, has launched the “Learn essential lessons before you suffer their consequences” campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the social risks on the young generations, which result from overexposure to new technologies and applications that have become a necessity.

The ceremony was attended by Brigadier Omair Al Muhairi, Director General of Police Operations at Abu Dhabi Police. He explained that the campaign reflects the goals envisioned by the police leadership, by instilling the best international concepts of police work, which advocate interaction with all segments of society. He also commended the concerted efforts exerted by all entities to promote safety and security, and called upon everyone to double the efforts and participate efficiently to ensure the success of the campaign and achieve its noble goals in the service of society.

Adding further, he said: “The campaign is a part of the ADP plans to support the concepts of comprehensive security, reinforce the role of the police as a leading national institution that maintains community stability, and promote communication with the segments of society using modern awareness methods.”

For his part, Brigadier Najim Al Hosani, Head of the Social Support Centers Department at Abu Dhabi Police, emphasized that the department is keen to combat any negative phenomenon that plagues society, enhance its protection, and strengthen the bonds of friendliness between its various components, by implementing proper proactive strategies to spread security education and maintain safety and security. He also called upon everyone to contribute efforts in order to fulfill the noble goals in the quest towards promoting community security.

Adding further, he said:  “Our world is changing and becoming increasingly complex. As individuals and institutions, we feel the rapid changes affecting every aspect of our daily lives. This prompts individuals and families to be in a continuous struggle with the world’s challenges and ever-changing circumstances, which require knowledge, skills and efforts to adapt. The rapid growth witnessed by the UAE gave ground to social, cultural, economic and technological challenges, some of which have had negative implications on some segments of society. This campaign aims to shed the light on the modern problems that occur in our society, due to the misuse of information and communication technologies.”

Brigadier Al Hosani referred to the growing number of social media users, which has exceeded the 2 billion mark: “Moreover, smart phones are becoming widespread worldwide; which makes it mandatory for us as individuals and institutions to raise public awareness and enable our families to face these challenges,” he continued.

Colonel Obaid Rashid Al Mughni, Chief of Community Affairs at the Abu Dhabi Police Social Support Centers Department, explained that in a first phase, the campaign will target male and female students across all schools affiliated with the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC), of the intermediate and secondary levels. The campaign will be expanded later on to include all universities and colleges in Abu Dhabi, as well as the Police Academy and Police Schools, and other relevant bodies.

He added that the campaign focuses on school and university students, who are the largest segment of social media users, which makes them vulnerable to the potential risks. Additionally, the campaign will be dedicated to raise awareness of parents and teachers, to reinforce their role and engage them more actively in the efforts to reduce these issues.

Colonel Al Mughni gave an overview of the campaign’s goals, and explaining that the great majority of reports received by the social support centers indicate a severe misuse of social media. Hence, the department is committed to raise awareness among the youth and to correct any bad behaviors.

According to Col. Al Mughni, the campaign also aims to build a balanced character among youth, and raise their awareness of the appropriate legal procedures when facing problems. It will also focus on highlighting the role of the social support centers, which endeavor to reinforce police efforts to protect society against potential risks and dangers, which undermine its security and stability.

Captian Eng. Saeed Al Rashidi, from the ICT Department at Abu Dhabi Police, stressed the importance of appropriate technology education, and the need to use social media technologies in a safe and beneficial manner in all circumstances. He noted that the ICT Department has an instrumental role in providing the youth with guidelines for safer use of technology.

The campaign’s launching ceremony was held at the Police Officers’ Club in Abu Dhabi, and was attended by heads of departments at the Police Operations General Directorate, officers and staff members from the Social Support Centers Department at the Ministry of Interior, in addition to officers and staff members from the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ, teachers, and a large number of students.
