ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, May 3rd 2015 [ME NewsWire]

On the occasion of Arab Traffic Week 2015, the Saaed Society to Reduce Traffic Accidents distributed flowers to motorists throughout the roads of Abu Dhabi. Arab Traffic Week 2015 is held from 3 to 9 May under the slogan “Start with Yourself… Be Committed” with the camaraderie of participating Arab countries.

Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of Public Relations Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, explained that the initiative is in coordination with the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police. He stressed on the communal responsibility for preserving the lives and properties of road users, and that responsibilities lie on citizens and residents alike. He called upon everyone, individuals and organizations, to activate community partnership in an effort to reduce traffic accidents and the subsequent deaths and injuries. He asked motorists to abide by the traffic law and to set good examples for others.

He added that traffic awareness activities during the Arab Traffic Week include lectures and programs that aim to enhance the community communication with the motorists. “The activities are designed to encourage drivers to abide by traffic laws through innovative methods that directly impact changing trends and raise the competency levels regarding how to drive on our roads,” he said. “They also aim to reduce negative behaviors such as speeding, reckless driving, tailgating, failing to wear the seat belt, using the mobile phone while driving, driving without a license, drifting, or other negative behaviors.”

“By communicating with drivers, we have a better chance to address the negative behaviors that lead to committing traffic errors. Through interactive events and activities, we are able to invite everyone to learn more about how to assume their responsibilities as motorists in an attractive way. Colonel Al Ameri stated that the most important contributing factor to reducing the numbers of traffic accidents is through changing the traffic behavior of road users, pedestrians, and motorists.

He noted that the initiative comes within the framework of the Saaed Society to enhance the participation of all society segments through volunteer work. The Society additionally endeavors to support and contribute to the governmental efforts of traffic awareness, given that voluntary work for traffic-related issues has been a proven and effective method for finding appropriate solutions to problems related to traffic safety in many developed countries.

“The Saaed Society is a strategic partner of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, in their efforts to improve traffic safety levels. Through outreach programs, the Society raises awareness regarding the dangers related being preoccupied with the mobile phone while driving; the importance of wearing a seatbelt, and the importance of placing children under the age of 10 in the back seats of the vehicle,” he said. He continued by listing the dangers related to other driving behaviors such as sudden swerving, negligence, lack of attention, speeding without considering the road situation, not staying within the designating lanes, burst tires, tailgating, and jaywalking.

Colonel Al Ameri continued by saying that the Saaed Society has made several initiatives in the field of traffic safety, which include organizing traffic awareness exhibitions coupled with awareness brochures in Arabic and English, which include: the Federal Traffic Law brochure, the Traffic Triangle brochure for children, the Annual Traffic Calendar brochure for children, and the Violations and Fines Table brochure in addition to many awareness lectures.
