UAE Participates in Arab Traffic Week

Under the Slogan “Start with Yourself… Be Committed”

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Tuesday, May 5th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

The UAE is participating in the Arab Traffic Week under the slogan “Start with Yourself… Be Committed”.  Arab Traffic Week is held from 3 to 9 May.

The UAE is celebrating the Arab Traffic Week 2015 with the brotherly Arab nations under the patronage of the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Ministers, which implemented the event following the recommendations of traffic department chiefs in the Arab countries.

Brigadier Ghaith Hassan Al Zaabi, Director General of the Traffic Coordination Directorate General at the Ministry of Interior, said: “Occasions such as this actively participate in raising the awareness of all road users; and this occasion in particular focuses on the individual person, who is truly the key element in traffic awareness. The slogan has been carefully and purposefully chosen in order to send a message of guidance. By taking these words to heart, we can achieve major humanitarian gains through the individual responsibility to be aware and to enforce proper traffic-related behavior; this will ensure the protection of both life and property.”

“Road traffic is the integration of motorists and road users at intersections and traffic signals; and our traffic officers are the mediators of this partnership, as they are there to guide and ensure that this relationship is both intelligent and respectful,” he said. Continuing, Brigadier Al Zaabi stressed the importance of community outreach for all segments of society in order to effectively raise awareness regarding the proper traffic laws, ethics, and procedures in order to provide safety for themselves and for others under all circumstances. “The directorate conducts ongoing awareness programs via different outlets, including social media,” he said, as he urged everyone to cooperate and to be committed in raising a responsible generation of road users and motorists.

“This year’s slogan for Arab Traffic Week reflects the serious pursuit of the Arab world to reduce accidents and to achieve traffic safety.  Tragedies that result from traffic accidents are a shared concern in any society, and we are relentless in working towards ways to reduce the social, psychological, and economic implications,” he said. Brigadier Al Zaabi pointed out that the occasion of Arab Traffic Week 2015 is one of the most important events that is held by the traffic departments in Arab countries, and includes a myriad of programs activities including meetings, forums, lectures, field visits, and interviews. Additionally, some of the week’s programs are broadcasted through various Arab media outlets.

Brigadier Al Zaabi confirmed that this year’s slogan “Start with Yourself…Be Committed”, stresses the role of self-discipline in achieving traffic safety. It is considered to be a clear message to road users to rectify their daily traffic behavior and to curb wrong behaviors. “The increased number of traffic accidents has become a worrying phenomenon,” he said. “Upon the direction of the Traffic Coordination Directorate General at the Ministry, the nation’s traffic and patrol departments are celebrating Arab Traffic Week.”

He reiterated the keenness of the Ministry to leverage any traffic occasion to participate in spreading traffic awareness in an effort to reduce accidents and preserve lives and properties - as these accidents drain the most important elements in society. He pointed out that the Ministry faces challenges in the increasing numbers of vehicles and licensed drivers, which requires ongoing awareness campaigns to support the prospects of self-censorship by road users.

He stressed that modifying the traffic behavior of road users, which includes drivers and pedestrians, remains the most important factor in accident reduction, as the human element is primarily responsible for those accidents and their negative implications. Cooperation and coordination between the traffic-related institutions and authorities on all levels is additionally essential in order to reduce accidents.
