Five Years After Starwood Acquisition, Le Meridien Emerges With New Brand Direction and the Strongest Portfolio Ever
LONDON, Tuesday, November 30th 2010 [ME NewsWire]:
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Five years after Le Méridien’s acquisition by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE:HOT), Le Méridien has been redefined, now boasting the brand’s strongest portfolio in its 38-year history and its strongest performance indicators. In a total brand re-launch, from product consolidation to a new and highly innovative brand strategy and a major service culture transformation programme, Le Méridien has catapulted into a new era. Over the past five years, Starwood has applied its brand building prowess to Le Méridien, which has re-imagined the hotel experience to cater to the world’s creative class of more than 150 million people globally.
Now represented by 105 properties in 50 countries spanning five continents, Le Méridien has undergone a dramatic re-launch to become a highly sought-after contemporary lifestyle brand. With over 85% of its properties located in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia Pacific, Le Méridien provides an international complement to Starwood’s historically strong North American portfolio, contributing to Starwood’s leadership as the most global hospitality company.
“Thanks to Starwood’s industry-leading centralised services and expertise in building leading lifestyle brands, Le Méridien has a new life and a bright future,” said Eva Ziegler, Starwood’s Global Brand Leader for Le Méridien and W Hotels Worldwide. “The result has been unprecedented success and a complete brand transformation since the Starwood acquisition five years ago. With distinctive positioning and guest initiatives, Le Méridien now attracts a new audience of creative, world-travelling guests who embrace the brand as part of their lives.”

عملاء "دي بي إس" مع باقات "ستارهب" StarHub هم أول من يستخدم حل الدفع الجديد "إن إف سي " من خلال الهاتف المتحرك في سنغافورة
سنغافورة، 29 نوفمبر 2010 [ME NewsWire]:

AMSTERDAM, Monday, November 29th 2010 [ME NewsWire]:
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Dutch Central Bank recently granted GlobalCollect a license as a Payment Institute, a so-called Payment Services Directive (PSD) license. Court Dismisses with Prejudice Nero AG’s Antitrust Claim Against MPEG LA
DENVER, Tuesday, November 30th 2010 [ME NewsWire]:
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The US District Court for the Central District of California dismissed for a second time last week a Sherman Act Section 2 claim brought by Nero AG against MPEG LA, this time with prejudice.
MPEG LA, LLC
MPEG LA is the world leader in alternative technology licenses, enabling users to acquire worldwide patent rights necessary for a technology standard or platform from multiple patent owners in a single transaction as an alternative to negotiating individual licenses. Wherever an independently administered one-stop patent license would provide a convenient marketplace alternative to assist users with implementation of their technology choices, the licensing model pioneered and employed by MPEG LA may provide a solution. By balancing patent users’ interest in reasonable access with patent owners’ interest in reasonable return, MPEG LA creates the opportunity for adoption of new technologies and fuels innovation. MPEG LA’s initial licensing program for MPEG-2 digital video compression helped produce the most widely employed standard in consumer electronics history, and the MPEG LA® Licensing Model has become the template for addressing other technologies. VODAFONE LAUNCHES MONEY TRANSFER
Doha,Qatar, Monday, November 29th 2010 [ME NewsWire]:
Vodafone Qatar today launched their revolutionary new service Vodafone Money Transfer. The service enables Vodafone customers in Qatar to instantly make international money remittances directly from their mobile phone. Approved to launch by Qatar Central Bank, this service is a major milestone not only in mobile telecommunications, but also in improving accessibility of financial services to low-income groups.
Vodafone Money Transfer is safe, simple, quick and the most convenient way to send money to family overseas. The service will make it easier to send money overseas for the more than 1 million expatriates living in Qatar who send the bulk of their salary home to their family.
In partnership with Doha Bank, Vodafone’s financial services provider for Vodafone Money Transfer, and Globe Telecom, Vodafone Money Transfer will enable customers to instantly make mobile-to-mobile money transfer from Qatar to the Philippines. In the future, Vodafone Money Transfer will be expanding remittance options beyond the Philippines to countries across Asia, Africa and the Middle East
For now, Vodafone Money Transfer users in Qatar will be able to send funds directly from their mobile phones to any GCASH enabled mobile in Philippines, or send money to a bank account or for collection at a GCASH Remit outlet. All Vodafone and GCASH transactions are secured with a PIN to ensure security of the fund transfer. In addition, both the sender and recipient are notified of the transaction via SMS.
In his opening speech, John Tombleson, Vodafone Acting CEO said, “We are thrilled to be launching this groundbreaking service that will change the way people send money abroad and make a world of difference to so many people’s lives.”
“Vodafone Money Transfer happened in Qatar thanks to the positive and forward thinking attitudes of the people, businesses and regulators in this country. Qatar has now established itself as a world leader in innovative financial services. On behalf of everyone at Vodafone Qatar, I’d like to thank His Highness the Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani for his progressive vision for Qatar that has allowed Vodafone Money Transfer to come to life,” continued John Tombleson.
The launch of Vodafone Money Transfer featured a live remittance demo from Doha to Manila performed by Ambassador of the Philippines to Qatar Crescente Relacion and celebrity TV personality Bianca Gonzalez in Manila, which took less than 5 minutes, end to end, proving how quick and easy to use Vodafone Money Transfer is.
“Vodafone has led mobile money services in Africa and across the world, with more than 20 million people using Vodafone to transfer money locally and internationally. Our ability to leverage the experience, best practices and people from across the Vodafone Group has been instrumental in being able to take this next step with international transfers from here in Qatar,” explained Senior Product Manager, Markus Bikker
“Current remittance services are rather costly, an average transmission of money to an international destination costs around QR 20. With Vodafone Money Transfer customers can send money to a GCASH phones to the Philippines within minutes and it costs only QR 12. Now more of people’s hard earned money gets to where it’s needed with Vodafone Money Transfer,” continued Markus Bikker.
To use the service customers need to register for a Vodafone Money Transfer account from Vodafone Qatar and money can be loaded onto their mobile phone from any Vodafone store, Doha Bank’s e-branches or can be loaded directly via a bank transfer. Once a customer has loaded their Vodafone Money Account they can then send abroad anytime they like. Until money is transferred or spent it is stored for customers with Doha Bank. This means that customers also have the option to get their money cashed out in any Vodafone store or Doha Bank e-branch.

‘O3b Networks Limited raises total funding of US$1.2 billion, to finance fully the construction and launch of its next generation global satellite con
ST. JOHN, Jersey, Channel Islands, Monday, November 29th 2010 [ME NewsWire]:
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- O3b Networks announced today that it has secured its final funding round before service launch. O3b Networks is the developer of a new fiber-quality, satellite-based global internet backbone for Telecommunications Operators and Internet Service Providers serving the emerging markets. The company has raised a total of US$ 1.2 billion from a group of investors and banks. This will see the company through to the launch of its first satellites which will provide low-latency, fiber-quality internet connectivity between developing markets and the global internet infrastructure.
The total funding now comprises a US$510m Coface-backed Senior Debt Facility provided by HSBC, ING, CA-CIB and Dexia; a US$115m Senior Debt Facility and a US$145m Mezzanine Facility provided by HSBC Principal Investments, DBSA, AFDB, DEG, Proparco, FMO, IFC and EAIF*; and US$410m in equity financing, of which US$230m is new equity investment.
The additional equity is being provided by a group of existing shareholders that includes Google, North Bridge Venture Partners and Allen & Company, with SES, Liberty Global and HSBC Principal Investments taking the leading role. New investors include the Development Bank of Southern Africa, Sofina and Satya Capital. With this final round of funding, SES will become the largest minority shareholder of O3b Networks and will provide in-kind services, including commercial and engineering expertise.
John W. Dick Chairman of O3b Networks Limited said:
“We are pleased to have the new shareholders supporting this important mission. The amount of new funding and the quality of the investors reflects O3b Networks’ ability to balance important social goals while maintaining the required private sector returns. Furthermore, I believe that O3b represents a major step change in the economics of connectivity for the developing world. The backing of the world’s leaders in internet, banking, cable and satellite underlines O3b’s significant role in connecting all the world’s people.”
Mark Rigolle, Chief Executive of O3b Networks Limited said:
“I am delighted that we are now fully funded and working towards a firm launch date. This news means that we are now truly on the map – our customers can be assured that O3b is a reality. Ever since Greg Wyler founded O3b in 2008, the company has enjoyed the support of a growing number of investors, customers and partners. This has allowed us to secure our funding and to achieve our goal of reaching the billions who have so far been poorly served or completely cut off from the internet – the greatest business and information resource of our time. For me personally, I have been truly encouraged to see the strong relationships O3b has built, and I am now looking forward to the next few years up to launch when we will be able to see a lot of hard work come to fruition.”
O3b stands for the “Other 3 billion”, a reference to nearly half of the world’s population that is not adequately served with broadband internet access. Through partnerships with Telecommunications Operators and Internet Service Providers, O3b’s technology will provide the speed of fiber optics with the reach of satellite, serving billions of end users around the world.
Dr Hamadoun Touré, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the UN agency for Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) said:
“I am delighted to welcome an innovative newcomer to the ICT market, especially one whose strategy offers the potential to extend connectivity to broadband networks to millions more people worldwide. O3b’s plan adds an exciting new piece to the puzzle through a low-cost solution that could help quickly bridge the emerging broadband divide separating rich and poor nations. The company’s plan to have services available by 2013 means this solution could also play a significant role in harnessing ICTs to help meet the UN Millennium Development Goals by the target date of 2015.”
O3b’s satellites will be placed in orbit 8,000 kilometers from the earth, four times closer to the planet than regular geostationary satellites, giving customers extremely low latency and providing access to approximately 70 per cent of the world’s population with fiber quality internet connectivity.
Thales Alenia Space is currently constructing O3b’s first eight medium earth orbit Ka-band satellites. The design of the system means that it will be possible to add many more satellites to the constellation, increasing capacity and transforming satellite communications for the developing world. O3b will begin commercial service during the first half of 2013 following the planned launch of the first eight satellites by Arianespace with a Soyuz launcher from French Guiana. ViaSat will provide the teleport and trunking product customer terminals.

DBS Customers with StarHub Plans are the First to Use the New NFC Mobile Payment Solution in Singapore
Trialists will be able to make everyday mobile payments, including bus and train fares, with their existing mobile handsets
SINGAPORE, Monday, November 29th 2010 [ME NewsWire]:
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Some 1, 000 DBS customers with StarHub mobile plans will be the first in Singapore to use the NFC Mobile Payment Solution trial service for everyday mobile payments. The trial will commence in December 2010 and will last for eight months. The project, which was collaboratively organised by DBS Bank, EZ-Link, Gemalto, MasterCard and StarHub, will involve adding an N-Flex solution enabling to turn conventional handsets into NFC-enabled mobile phone without any change to the device.
The N-Flex solution functions on SIM cards across multiple mobile handsets hence helping to accelerate the ubiquity of handsets supporting NFC. The solution is also the first-of-its-kind conforming to the Single Wire Protocol (SWP) as endorsed by the GSM Association (GSMA).
The NFC trial user will then be able to make payments with their mobile handsets at all merchant outlets that accept the MasterCard PayPass™ or the ez-link card, as well as on public transportation such as buses and trains.
The trial will involve a group of participants who will receive an electronic mailer from either StarHub or DBS Bank that contains instructions on how to register their participation online. Trialists will then be required to visit the StarHub Customer Service Centre at One Raffles Place (OUB Centre) or designated StarHub road shows to have the Upteq N-Flex device inserted and mapped onto the SIM cards of their mobile handsets before they can start making payments with their phones.
“With the rapidly expanding use of mobile devices, our customers are increasingly expecting financial services and payments to be offered on their mobile devices. We are happy our cardholders will be the first in Singapore that will benefit from the convenience of having the functionality of NFC-enabled chip embedded onto their mobile phones to make payments. Through this, we hope to further promote the adoption of cashless payment in Singapore,” said Ms. Ooi Huey Tyng, Senior Vice President, Cards & Unsecured Loans, DBS Bank Ltd.
“Through this partnership with industry partners in delivering the first mobile payment device that leverages on the NFC technology in Singapore, EZ-Link believes that its customers will benefit from the convenience of having the functionality of an ez-link card embedded onto their mobile phones. We hope to also promote the adoption of cashless payment by merging it with a device that is already a necessity most Singaporeans carry around with them at all times,” said Nicholas Lee, Executive Director of EZ-Link Pte Ltd.
“Gemalto is delighted to drive the technology behind this landmark trial. Our N-Flex solution was created specifically to empower mass adoption of the ever convenient and easy-to-use NFC mobile payments. As more countries deploy this service, we are glad to be part of a collaboration between industry leaders to roll this out for Singapore, making us one of the first in Asia to do so,” adds Tan Teck Lee, Gemalto Asia President and CITO.
“The mobile phone has become an indispensible part of everyday life, making it an ideal tool to transform the way consumers pay for everyday purchases,” said Julienne Loh, vice president and Country Manager, Singapore, MasterCard Worldwide. “Working closely with Gemalto, MasterCard is taking the lead to deliver a convenient and secure payment method for consumers using a wide range of mobile devices. Through this trial with our partners DBS, EZ-Link and StarHub, Singapore will be at the forefront of developments in this field.”
Ms. Yeong Mun Ling, Vice President of StarHub’s Business Strategy and Customer Lifecycle Management said, “With the proliferation of mobile handsets in Singapore, and the growing prominence of mobile payment transactions, we believe now would be a good time to implement this unique NFC solution. Not only will this trial help us measure the level of customer acceptance for the new technology, it will also help us gather critical feedback on how the service can be further enhanced.”
The service is currently scheduled to be launched to the masses in the later part of 2011.

SES Participates in Equity Financing for O3b Networks
O3b raises USD 1.2B to see it through to service launch
LUXEMBOURG, Monday, November 29th 2010 [ME NewsWire]:
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Global satellite operator SES S.A. (Paris:SESG) (LuxX:SESG) announced today that it is participating in a second round of equity financing for O3b Networks in which SES has a minority equity participation. O3b Networks is the developer of a new fiber-quality, satellite-based, global internet backbone for telecommunications operators and internet service providers in emerging markets. This second round of funding secures the financing required to take O3b through to its service launch in the first half of 2013.
O3b has now raised a total of USD 1.2 billion from a group of investors and banks. The funding comprises a USD 510 million Coface-backed debt facility, a USD 115 million senior commercial debt facility, a USD 145 million mezzanine tranche and USD 410 million in equity financing, of which approximately USD 230 million is new equity investment. The Coface-backed facility is being supplied by a number of international banks. The senior commercial debt and the mezzanine have predominantly been taken up by institutional investors.
SES will make an additional equity investment of up to USD 75 million in cash in the next three years. SES, HSBC and Liberty Global are the lead sponsors of the group of investors which also includes Google, North Bridge Venture Partners as well as new investors, Sofina, DBSA (the Development Bank of Southern Africa) and Satya, to provide the equity funding.
Including this new investment, SES has agreed to invest up to a total of USD 155 million. Its shareholding will be approximately 34 percent, and is expected to rise over the next two years to approximately 44 percent, also taking into account in-kind services that SES is contributing to O3b Networks. These in-kind services include engineering, commercial and other support to O3b in order to assist the company’s development.
O3b is building the world’s first ultra-low latency, fiber speed satellite network to serve as a global internet backbone and next generation backhaul infrastructure for people and businesses in emerging markets. The service will combine the speed of a fiber network with the global reach of a satellite system, and will enable telecommunications providers and internet service providers to serve billions around the world.
“We are very pleased with the success of this final round of funding, and the opportunity to be an integral part of this new and exciting venture,” said Romain Bausch, President and CEO of SES. “With their innovative satellite network, O3b will be able to provide emerging markets with the fast and reliable internet connectivity that they currently do not have. This investment also perfectly complements our strategy to increase SES’ presence in developing countries, and to ensure satellite’s prominent role in their future.”
O3b will initially launch eight satellites that will be placed in medium earth orbit 8,000 kilometers from the earth, which is much closer to the planet than geostationary satellites at over 35,000 kilometers, and accounts for the low latency of the service. This innovative satellite system will cover approximately 70 percent of the world’s population with fiber quality internet connectivity at attractive terms and conditions.

GE Healthcare Showcases Healthymagination Commitment and Innovations at RSNA 2010; Latest Advancements on Display in Booth 5533
Technologies foster better, more efficient care with improvements in image quality, dose management and clinician workflow
CHICAGO, Sunday, November 28th 2010 [ME NewsWire]:
RSNA 2010
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Increasing access. Improving quality and efficiency. Lowering costs. When GE launched its healthymagination initiative last year, these were the long-term goals and at RSNA 2010, GE Healthcare will highlight a variety of technologies developed to support this strategy and help improve patient care worldwide.
“Since the launch of healthymagination, GE Healthcare has worked with caregivers and organizations around the world to develop innovative technologies to better address the needs of healthcare providers and their patients,” said John Dineen, President and CEO of GE Healthcare. “This year, the company will showcase the results of this shared commitment in several areas of care including CT, X-ray and Healthcare IT, among others, all meant to foster providers’ ability to deliver better healthcare to more people at a lower cost.”
CT
For decades GE Healthcare has invested in leading, state of the art technology for significantly lowering dose in computed tomography (CT) procedures. GE Healthcare’s exclusive ASiR (adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction) low dose reconstruction technology, available on the GE Discovery™ CT750 HD and LightSpeed VCT, can reduce dose by up to 40-50% while maintaining image quality and can be implemented as a cost-effective upgrade for existing GE LightSpeed VCT customers.
GE is also highlighting the newest low-dose technology in the company’s CT portfolio–a model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) technology called Veo currently available in Europe. It is 510(k) pending at FDA and not yet available for sale in the U.S. When compared to previous GE reconstruction methods, Veo’s capabilities “change the rules” of CT imaging by applying revolutionary new modeling techniques to deliver lower noise, resolution gain, improved low contrast detectability and artifact suppression.
Healthcare IT
The latest addition to the Centricity family, Centricity PACS 3.2 delivers more impact, with a smaller footprint. Centricity* PACS version 3.2 boasts a feature set that can optimize radiologist efficiency, enhance image interpretation, and enable growth from the PACS that stores one of every five digital exams in the United States.
Interventional Radiology
The company is introducing the Innova* 3100-IQ (Optima* Edition), a reliable, high-performance interventional combo lab that offers excellent image quality and the industry’s highest DQE detector at a lower price point and total cost of ownership to help put interventional procedures within financial reach of small to medium-sized rural hospitals.
MR
GE Healthcare will be introducing new MR scanners, applications and coil suites designed to deliver premium clinical and research performance, improve the patient experience and boost productivity of radiologists and technologists alike.
Nuclear Medicine
GE Healthcare is announcing the FDA clearance of the use of an innovative technology that may assist in assessment and early detection of breast cancer in women who are at high risk for the disease. The Discovery* NM750b Molecular Breast Imaging system with CZT detector, which is not yet available for sale, utilizes a small FOV gamma camera dedicated for breast imaging based on accumulation of a radioactive tracer in hypermetabolic cancer cells.
Surgery
The company is showcasing its new mobile surgical C-arm. The Brivo OEC 850, recently launched in China, is a cost-conscious, high quality imaging system that will expand the reach of orthopedic minimally invasive surgery.
Additionally, the company is introducing Brilliant, an educational program designed to help mobile C-arm users manage radiation dose while producing optimum images to enable great patient care.
The educational program, which complements the company’s existing customer training offerings and dose reduction product features, includes radiation safety classes, an iPad application and handy reference tools.
X-Ray
Designed for digital use based on customer input, GE’s new X-ray technology, FlashPad, is a flexible, wireless detector that features two handles that make it easier to position and maneuver. Aon Hewitt launches 2011 Best Employers in Middle East Study
Focus on driving business results through people
Dubai, Sunday, November 28th 2010 [ME NewsWire]:
Aon Hewitt has launched its Best Employers in Middle East 2011 study - the largest employee research project and market practice study undertaken in the Middle East. More than 100 well known organisations from the region participated in the 2009 study.
The Best Employers study provides insights into how people practices relate to business effectiveness. It enables an organisation to benchmark its own approach, and will identify the 2011 shortlist of the Aon Hewitt Best Employers in Middle East.
The Aon Hewitt Best Employers in Middle East 2011 study is a part of the Aon Hewitt Best Employers in Asia Pacific 2011 study, which spans 11 markets including Australia/New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. In the Middle East, Aon Hewit has partnered with Amcham Egypt, Bahrain Association of Banks, Mohammed Bin Raktoum Foundation, Dubai and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Riyadh for the purpose of developing the study.
Organisations need to register to participate in the study by 20 December 2010. The study is expected to represent the views of around 200,000 employees across the region. Participating companies will receive an executive summary of the key findings and conclusions, free of charge in May 2011.
Linking with business performance
The 2011 study will have an increased focus on how organisations' people practices link with business performance. It will examine the business impact of positive people practices, and evaluate the actions and behaviours of the different employee segments that enable improved business performance.
Aon Hewitt Best Employers are selected by an independent judging panel comprised of leading academics and eminent business leaders. Participation is strictly confidential. Only the organisations that are named Aon Hewitt Best Employers will be announced publicly in May 2011.
Mr. Samir Mardini, Talent & Performance Solution Leader, Middle East and South Asia at Aon Hewitt, said:
"The inaugural Best Employers in Middle East 2009 study successfully represented views of over 150,000 employees across the Middle East region. This made it the largest employee research project in the Middle East. The Best Employers 2011 study will not just focus on how organisations drive business results through their people but also how The Best succeeded during the economic downturn.
"While revealing how organisations in the Middle East are achieving a real competitive advantage through their people, the study also indicates where an organisation is on its journey to becoming a Best Employer. We expect this study to enhance the standards of people practices in Middle East - making the region a better place to work."
Companies can register their interest to participate in the study by visiting www.hewitt.com/bestemployersmiddleeast.
