The UN Conducting Operations from UAE Camp

The UAE Search and Rescue Team at the Ministry of Interior, has commenced its humanitarian mission and provision of logistical support in the international relief operation to aid the victims of the earthquake in Nepal. According to Lt. Colonel Mohammed Abdul Jalil Al Ansari, Head of the UAE Search and Rescue Team and Director General of Civil Defense in Abu Dhabi 6,659 people have died and 14,063 people are injured due to the earthquake.
Lt. Colonel Al Ansari pointed out that from the moment they arrived, the team’s mission in Nepal focused on providing medical services. The services include examining patients, assessing their condition, supporting hospitals with the latest medical tools and equipment, and training and introducing Nepalese doctors and nurses to the best methods in categorizing different medical conditions. The support provided by the UAE Search and Rescue Team comes as an embodiment of the nation’s keenness to help those in need, to rescue victims of natural disasters around the world, and to assist friendly and brotherly nations.
He mentioned that the engineering group of the Search and Rescue team utilized the Security Media Drones to assess the integrity of damaged buildings, making the UAE team the first to use drones in search and rescue operations worldwide. The drones were additionally used to scan and to provide further safety and protection for everyone participating in the humanitarian mission.
Lt. Colonel Al Ansari explained that these drones are a part of the team’s key equipment in search and rescue operations, as they provide a wide range of vision over the site and help determine the dangers and ideal exits and entryways. “There is no doubt that the drones were used to help the engineering group make the most propitious decisions,” he said.
Al Ansari pointed that the team provided logistical support to the international search and rescue teams, the UAE Red Crescent, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, and Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Charity and Humanitarian Foundation alongside other UAE governmental institutions. In addition, the team provided technical support to the UN’s International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG), by providing the latest satellite communication equipment, as well as highly trained teams to manage the operations room.
He mentioned that the UN is conducting its search and rescue operations through the UAE Search and Rescue Team’s camp, and are able to benefit from the high field skills and advanced equipment in order to handle and survive disasters. He pointed that 76 teams are participating in the relief efforts following the earthquake in Nepal, including 16 teams accredited by the INSARAG in accordance with the approved rescue mechanism.
The international statistics estimate the number of people affected by the earthquake in Nepal to be 8 million people, clean drinking water is needed for 4.2 million people, 3 million people need food, 16, 0786 homes have completely collapsed, 14,673 homes are partially damaged.
