ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, Monday, November 1st 2010 [ME NewsWire]:
Etisalat showcased a number of new convergence and connectivity solutions during its participation at SAMENA Telecommunications Council’s 'Convergence to Casablanca 2010’. Held recently in Morocco, the event was themed 'Transforming Challenges into Growth' and provided SAMENA members and non-members the opportunity to discuss key technology areas and their impacts on technological progression and revenue generation.
Representing Etisalat in this gathering was Mr. Ahmed Bin Ali, Group Senior Vice President, corporate Communications - and Ali Amiri, Executive Vice President Carrier and Wholesale.
In a panel on Optical Networks & Applications and how IPTV is stimulating investments in FTTx networks, Ahmed bin Ali highlighted Etisalat’s role in developing telecom infrastructure in its markets with particular reference to UAE. He also referred to Etisalat’s successful broadband experience in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and UAE.
Ahmed bin Ali also explained how Etisalat excelled in its operations with no adverse effects on the quality of services and has continued to spend where needed, whether it is on infrastructure such as fiber optic network, which will be accomplished in UAE in 2011 making Abu Dhabi the first city in the world be fully connected by this network, or in maintaining the quality of services and networks upgrades.
Ali Amiri, Executive Vice President Carrier and Wholesale also addressed the Conference on the primary challenges facing operators. He highlighted that growth in broadband and internet traffic in the region over the last few years has exceeded that of the rest of the world. This certainly created challenges on a domestic and international level for operators..
He added that the major drive behind this substantial increase internet traffic has been broadband penetration, in which UAE stands as the highest in the region and also one of the highest worldwide. Another factor is the penetration and usage of smart phones, the impact of which is likely to be even more substantial with the implementation of LTE (Long Term Evolution) which is expected to be launched soon by Etisalat.
He mentioned that Etisalat is coping with this growth locally by investing heavily in the domestic network infrastructure, which includes the transformation to Next Generation Network which is almost completed. With this, Etisalat aims to maintain high quality quality services and least disturbance to its valued customers.
He added that internationally this has been catered for, through Etisalat's engagement and investment in major international submarine and terrestrial cabling , as well as the timely upgrade of cabling infrastructure. Amiri also highlighted on the importance of the regionally announced terrestrial cable project RCN , the cable, a fully diversified route, linking UAE to Saudi Arabia ,Jordan, Syria, Turkey and to Europe. This cable will not only cope with such growth but also plays a vital role as part of a restoration scheme for the remaining submarine cables, as well enhancing the high speed broadband connectivity among the countries in the region.
