(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Al Jazeera is further expanding its international engagement: The broadcaster is planning to go on air with a new news channel for the Balkan region in the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo. As a leading system integrator, Qvest Media will take on responsibility for technical design, planning, system integration and commissioning of a new TV infrastructure. Furthermore, in order to integrate the new facility into the worldwide Al Jazeera network, the company will also set up an IPTV solution tailored to the broadcaster’s requirements. This will allow the content of the news channel to be distributed internally throughout the Al Jazeera broadcasting network.
Once construction is complete, the broadcaster will report live with about 100 staff on-site in the local languages with news spanning the various regions. At the end of 2010, Al Jazeera took over the Sarajevo-based station NTV 99 for this project, and this station is now being integrated into the Al Jazeera network as a pan-regional news channel.
For the production and editing of news reports, Qvest Media is setting up an Avid iNews editing system for more than 40 journalists, a video and audio post-production system as well as graphic systems. Solutions from MediaGeniX are to be integrated for content planning and scheduling, while a central playout platform‚ consisting of in- and outgest video servers from Omneon and a PebbleBeach automation‚ will facilitate the material exchange. The ingest and news playout is to be controlled using Avid Interplay solutions. The overall production format will be XDCAM HD at 50 Mbit/s, which will enable the various studio personnel to work with fast, user-friendly and standardized production processes. To this end, the XDCAM EX recording format used by the electronic news gathering units will also be seamlessly integrated into the workflow.
As part of the Germany-based Wellen+Nöthen Group, Qvest Media will also support the operational phase at Al Jazeera Balkan following commissioning with a response team on site and a 24/7 remote support.
