Deutsche Bahn’s Real-Time System for Passenger Travel Information Powered by Cinterion M2M Solution
MUNICH - Wednesday, April 11th 2012 [ME NewsWire]
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Cinterion, the global leader in cellular machine-to-machine (M2M) communication modules and a Gemalto (Euronext NL 0000400653 GTO) company, announces its M2M technologyis powering Deutsche Bahn’s new dynamic passenger information system. Deutsche Bahn, the chief railway network operator in Germany, is implementing the cost effective system in train stations across the country to deliver up-to-the-minute information on departures and delays, helping passengers manage itineraries and relieve travel stress.
The new passenger information system, known in Germany as “DSA - Dynamischer Schriftanzeiger”, is being deployed in smaller and often remote train stations where hard-wired solutions used in larger railway stations are too costly and time-consuming to install. It harnesses the power of the Cinterion TC65 connectivity solution to distribute real-time train travel updates from Deutsche Bahn’s central passenger information server over wireless networks to weather-proof display screens on the train platforms. Embedded with JavaTM technology, the Cinterion terminal manages and maintains continuous operation of the information displays. In addition, Cinterion’s audio interface generates voice messages, which are broadcast over train station loudspeakers.
“The Cinterion Java terminal was easy to integrate and really helped to keep costs down by eliminating the need of extra processors and audio technology,” said Klaus Wilting, Chief Information & Technology Officer of Deutsche Bahn Station&Service AG. “Cinterion enables reliable communication even in remote areas for improved customer service and highly efficient schedule reporting at thousands of small stations and unmanned platforms.”
“Our plug-and-play M2M terminal enables Deutsche Bahn to improve schedule accuracy by providing continuous updates to train stations where wired connectivity is unavailable or cost-prohibitive,”said Norbert Muhrer, CEO of Cinterion. “The enhanced system demonstrates how M2M technology can vastly improve daily life experience by keeping passengers informed with convenience.”
The Deutsche Bahn solution is being deployed in more than 4,000 railway stations throughout Germany with approximately 3,000 display units already operational and another 3,500 expected by 2015. The project was partially funded by Konjunkturpaket I and II, two economic stimulus packages sponsored by the German government.
