World Wide Web Foundation Names Anne Jellema New Chief Executive Officer
BOSTON & GENEVA - Thursday, April 19th 2012 [ME NewsWire]
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Following a successful global search, the World Wide Web Foundation Board of Directors announced today that Anne Jellema, former International Director of Policy and Campaigns at ActionAid International (AAI), will take over the responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer from Steve Bratt effective May 5, 2012.
Ms. Jellema brings the experience necessary to enter the next phase of the organization’s work. As its core programs further develop, her complementary leadership and experience in advocacy, research, campaigning, and program management will ensure the continued integrated, global approach to the Web Foundation’s initiatives. Ms. Jellema will lead the Foundation into a phase of accelerated impact around the world – working towards a future where the Web is used by all people to improve their lives, communities and planet.
As International Director of Policy at ActionAid International (AAI), Ms. Jellema directed multi-country advocacy and campaigns across the organization’s 43 member countries. She was instrumental in envisioning and developing AAI’s campaign programs, and eventually oversaw the organization’s programming in the food and agriculture, women’s rights, and education sectors. Previously, she was Global Coordinator for the Global Campaign for Education, where she grew a small group of international NGOs into one of the largest and most successful international movements for economic and social rights. Ms. Jellema was educated at the University of Michigan, University of Chicago and King's College Cambridge. She resides in Cape Town, South Africa.
Rick Haythornthwaite, Chairman of the World Wide Web Foundation said: “With only one third of the world’s population currently having access to the Web, our mission is to extend its power to foster change for the better around the globe at a time when such change is sorely needed. We feel fortunate to have attracted a person of Anne’s caliber, experience and energy to build on our strong existing platform and intensify our impact.”
Dr. Bratt, who announced his intention to resign in December 2011, has led the Foundation from its conception in 2008 through the current launch phase. Working with Web inventor, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, prestigious Boards of Directors, and an excellent staff, the Web Foundation has become a global leader uniquely positioned to exploring and demonstrating innovative approaches to building the global capacity to leverage the Web to provide useful services for communities in need. During the transition, Dr. Bratt is working closely with Ms. Jellema to ensure no disruption to the global partnerships and programs established during the Foundation’s initial years. Dr. Bratt will continue his affiliation with the World Wide Web Foundation as a member of the Science Council for the Foundation’s new Web Index, launching on June 20th of this year.
The World Wide Web Foundation, founded by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, is leading a global movement to reinforce the right of Web access and freedoms for all and accelerate the ability of all individuals and communities to unlock its full potential economic, social and political impact. It envisions a future Web that can be used by all in valuable ways to make a step change in the well-being of individuals, families and their broader communities, especially those with the greatest need. With five core programs being applied across the globe in the areas of Open Government Data, Mobile Web Entrepreneurship, Voice Technology, Agriculture, and Web Impact Measurement, it seeks to strengthen the global Web ecosystem while providing individuals and communities with access to the tools, knowledge and connections to improve their own well-being through economic, political and social change.
