Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, May 27th 2012 [ME NewsWire]
Dubai Internet City supported the fourth Abu Dhabi Telecom CEO Summit that highlighted current industry challenges and the role of broadband/satellite communication during the Arab Spring. The event also examined the industry’s future in the MENA region.
Organised by IIR Middle East, the fourth Abu Dhabi Telcom CEO Summit was held on 14 May at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center. The summit drew the participation of major telecom operators, vendors and consultants.
Majed Al Suwaidi, Director, Business Development, Dubai Internet City and Dubai Outsource Zone, said: “The telecom sector in the UAE has witnessed rapid development in the past few years. Through deploying superior technology, the service providers deliver up-to-date solutions to a wide customer base. The achievement has been possible amidst the conducive regulatory environment provided by the government, which has contributed to building a strategic network that meets customer needs and expectations.
“A young population with high spending capacity has escalated the demand for broadband services and faster connectivity in the region. We expect the sector to grow further and bring in new players and innovative solutions that standout in a competitive landscape. Against this scenario, Dubai Internet City is delighted to have served as the official partner for the Abu Dhabi Telcom CEO Summit and reaffirm our commitment to the industry.”
According to a report from World Economic Forum, the UAE topped the Arab countries in the global network readiness index for 2011 and ranked among the world's five leading countries. The report added the achievement highlights the success of the public and private sectors as well as individuals in the adoption and implementation of IT and telecommunications, one of the key objectives of the UAE telecom regulatory authority (TRA),.
The 2011 Global IT and Telecommunications Report also positioned the UAE at the 24th position globally, one level behind its ranking in 2009 and 2010. The slide did not reflect a setback to development efforts in IT and telecommunications. Instead, it indicated the fact that countries elsewhere were able to grab a higher rate of growth last year. However, the UAE is expected to take a better position in 2011-2012, especially with Abu Dhabi becoming the first capital in the world to be completely covered with the fibre optic network (FTTx).
At the forefront of the region's ICT industry, Dubai Internet City remains committed to supporting emerging technology trends in the region and continues to play an instrumental role in developing the industry while contributing to Dubai's drive for creating a knowledge-based economy.
