Ministry of Health of United Arab Emirates Works with Nuance and Emerging Technologies to Catapult Healthcare System into a New Era

UAE Ministry of Health to voice-enable EMR system; advances state-of-the-art medical reporting and world-class patient service across the country

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Friday, January 25th 2013 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Nuance Communications, Inc.and Emerging Technologies announced today that the Ministry of Health in the United Arab Emirates will voice-enable the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems of hospitals and clinics over the next twelve months. In the first phase, 1,000 physicians and nurses will be equipped with Nuance’s Dragon Medical, one of the leading speech recognition solutions for healthcare. Nuance’s regional distribution partner Emerging Technologies, based in Abu Dhabi, will lead the project, manage the implementation and train users.

The quality of healthcare services is an indicator of the progress and development of a country. The decision of the Ministry of Health puts the United Arab Emirates on a par with other highly digitized healthcare systems such as those of Norway, Switzerland and the United States. Speech recognition helps reduce healthcare expenditure on documentation and speeds up the availability of information in electronic record systems. As a result, physicians can deliver better patient care more quickly and patients benefit from fast and accurate availability of their medical documents.

“We see speech recognition as having so many benefits for both staff and patients, primarily by allowing doctors to be able to pay more attention directly to patients as they can spend less time and effort on typing up their diagnoses or producing reports,” notes Mohamed Nabeel AlDoy, Wareed project manager.

“The Ministry of Health of the United Arab Emirates shows visionary leadership across the region and the world to improve the quality of healthcare and drive the use of EMRs with the help of modern speech recognition technology. This will result in better working conditions for healthcare professionals, redirecting their attention to patients through seamless documentation. We are honored to be involved in such a prestigious healthcare project of national and even regional relevance,” says Dan McGraw, vice president, Nuance Healthcare.

“This is a strategic move toward greater healthcare efficiency. The large-scale deployment of leading-edge speech recognition technology will deliver an advanced healthcare experience to the people of the UAE; an experience in which healthcare information is available whenever and wherever it is needed for the treatment of patients and all information-related barriers – such as delayed or missing reports – have been eliminated for the sake of healthier lives and better treatment outcomes,” says Sassine Mazraani, CEO, Emerging Technologies.

Nuance Healthcare and Emerging Technologies will be present at Arab Health, Saeed 1, stand S1D70.
