Innovative African Solar company launches Power Stix, the solar powered candle, at Mobile World Congress, Barcelona
BARCELONA, Spain - Wednesday, February 27th 2013 [ME NewsWire]
Mobile World Congress 2013
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Solar Way, the designer and manufacturer of solar powered products for charging and lighting, today announced from Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, its intention to seek global partners for its innovative Solar Powered Charging Station (SPCS). The SPCS provides a charging facility for multiple cell phones which can be installed for use in retail facilities such as shops and post offices or at cell phone company concessions. Because the SCPS uses solar power, rather than relying on grid electricity, it can be taken 'on the road' and Solar Way will seek to partner with entrepreneurs wishing to take the SPCS into communities to provide a cell phone charging service.
The SCPS provides a facility to charge 14 cell phones simultaneously. Offering a "phone locker" in which to deposit a phone securely whilst it charges, the SCPS will charge the customer’s cell phone for a small fee, depending on the amount of time the phone takes to charge. For those living without access to grid power, the SPCS will be a welcome facility as customers can currently go days (if not weeks) without being able to charge their cell phones and access their mobile services.
Commenting on the launch, Solar Way CEO, Marco Signorini said: "We've had a fantastic response to our innovative solar powered products which range from our solar lanterns, which are already selling in the hundreds of thousands, to our new products such as the SPCS. In order to bring the SCPS to the largest possible customer base, we are seeking to partner with mobile operators - particularly those with millions of customers off-grid - as well as retailers and other consumer outlets which have large footprints across Africa and other emerging markets."
Solar Way also announced today the launch of the Power Stix, a solar powered candle which combines cheap, clean and safe lighting with the facility to charge a cell phone. As well as being safer than candles which cause thousands of house fires every year and cleaner than kerosene which causes dangerous indoor air pollution, the Power Stix is significantly cheaper, costing less than $20. The average African family living off-grid spends $12 every month on candles.
Signorini added: "The Power Stix is designed to support the widespread adoption of sustainable solar powered technologies for charging and lighting. Many of our customers have been using candles for lighting in their homes for generations and we believe the Power Stix provides an affordable alternative which will really support the transition to a cleaner, safer solar solution."
