Important Painting of the Holy Prophet’s Footprints to Be Sold at Auction by Mullock’s

CHURCH STRETTON, England - Monday, May 13th 2013 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- A rare 18th century painting of the footprints of the prophet Muhammad will take centre stage at British auction house Mullock’s sale on the 21st May.

Painted during the 18th century Ottoman Empire and richly decorated in gold ink, the painting (Lot 369) is expected to make between £10,000- 15,000 GBP.

According to written and oral sources, the Holy Prophet Muhammad left imprints of his bare feet on a number of stones. Some of these footprints are preserved in situ, where they were left, and other footprints were moved and later preserved in mosques, shrines, and tombs of prominent Muslim figures. Some of these footprints were collected and are now housed in the Topkopi Museum in Istanbul.

A similar depiction of the Prophet’s footprints on an 18th century Iznik tile is housed at the Benaki Islamic Museum Greece.

Mullock’s auctioneer - Richard Westwood Brookes said “The painting is of the finest quality and an extremely important piece of Islamic heritage.”

Other highlights include early portraits of the Islamic Mughal rulers of India and a fine early silk Islamic tomb cover. The online auction catalogue can be found at http://www.mullocksauctions.co.uk/auction.php?date=20130521&id=19

The sale takes place on Tuesday May 21st at the Clive Pavilion, Ludlow Racecourse, Ludlow, Shropshire (English Midlands) at 1pm BST.
