ADP Traffic Directorate: Awareness-Raising through Social Media benefited 3 Million Individuals during Ramadan

The Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate indicated that about 3,360,765 individuals received awareness-raising newsletters and messages via social networking sites during the Holy Month of Ramadan. This comes in line with the awareness-raising campaign launched by the Directorate via social networking sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter; and is part of its program to reduce traffic accidents, under the slogan "Together”.

Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate explained that a total of 2,004,265 participants took part in the campaign through Facebook, with a total of 20,000 posts, comments and Likes, and  40,000 followers. . Furthermore, he noted that the overall number of Twitter impressions amounted to 1,250,000, with a total of 43,000 individuals who viewed or retweeted the awareness messages; while 3,500 viewers watched the educational video clips on YouTube.

Furthermore, Al Harithi noted that the campaign’s objectives embody the Directorate’s strategy to reach the highest levels of safety by leveraging the deep meanings of the auspicious month of Ramadan to promote community-based partnership. This would positively affect traffic behavior and enhance awareness on the risks of traffic accidents; out of the firm belief that traffic safety is everyone's responsibility.

“The campaign, implemented as part of the “Together” Program to reduce traffic accidents, included different activities, namely; distributing leaflets, brochures and pamphlets; awareness programs; educational documentaries; religious prayers; and tips about the need to adhere to safety procedures.  A number of competitions were organized though local radio stations, as well as the Ramadan contest “Together” through social networking sites, and prizes were distributed to the winners,” stated Brigadier Al Harithi.

Furthermore, Brigadier Al Harithi indicated that the awareness-raising societal programs during Ramadan focused on three main issues; motorists, pedestrians and vehicles’ safety, being issues of concern for all segments of society. He also pointed out that the initiative underlined the need to use seat belts; avoid using mobile phones while driving; as well as the risks of jumping a red light and not disrupting traffic near shopping centers and places of worship.

Al Harithi also underscored the Directorate’s keenness to leverage community-based awareness with a view to enhance communication with both motorists and pedestrians and promote good traffic behaviors in Abu Dhabi.

“The Directorate posted daily prayers and traffic tips on all social networking sites related to the “Together” Program throughout the month of Ramadan,” added Al Harithi.

Moreover, a total of 59 educational videos were shown; acquainting community members with some of the mosques across the Emirate; displaying religious prayers; and documenting the Abu Dhabi Police staff members’ efforts in distributing brochures and leaflets to worshippers at mosques and to visitors at the various shopping centers.

“The awareness-raising efforts targeted the various segments of society, and included distributing publications and informational leaflets and pamphlets to the public in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region; notably at the Marina Mall, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Al Ain Mall, Sheikha Salama Mosque, as well as the shopping malls.  The number of publications distributed totaled 20,000 booklets; 10,000 brochures; and 3,000 cards,” added Brigadier Al Harithi.

Brigadier Al Harithi stated that the societal awareness-raising programs organized during Ramadan included the “Together” Competition through the “Together” Campaign’s two official pages on Facebook and Instagram. “The competition aims to enhance competitiveness among participants, and curtail negative behaviors that do not reflect compliance of citizens and residents with by the laws and regulations in force; and promote traffic rules and regulations,” he said.

The competition included thirteen “Best Photo” categories as follows: “best photo of an individual with his seatbelt on”; “best photo of the correct tire pressure”; “best photo of a passenger with his seatbelt on”; “best photo of back seat passengers with their seatbelts on”; and “best photo of the proper location for the mobile phone inside the vehicle”.

The competition also featured the “best photo of the spare tire and accessories in the vehicle”; “best photo of an individual helping someone else cross the street at the pedestrian crosswalk”; “best photo of a clean windshield and rear window”; “best photo of the correct positioning of the vehicle’s rearview mirror”; “best photo of the best way to check the vehicle’s lighting before driving”; “best photo of the best way to check the front, rear and side signaling lights before driving”; and the “best photo of traffic behaviors and mistakes made on the road”.

Concluding, Brigadier Al Harithi explained that the competition’s jury adopted standards based on the content, quality and creativity of the participating photos.  He also pointed out that one winner was chosen every day among Facebook participants; and one winner chosen every Friday on Instagram.  It is noteworthy that each winner was awarded a cash prize of AED 500.
