A total of 24 people died and 33 others were seriously injured in 157 traffic accidents that occurred on the Abu Dhabi external roads; notably the Abu Dhabi/Dubai-Abu Dhabi/Al Ain-and Abu Dhabi/Sila during the morning and afternoon periods in the first half of the year. According to Colonel Khamis Ishaq Mohammed, Deputy Director of the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate, the traffic accidents took place during peak hours and were caused by motorists driving back and forth from their home to their workplace.
Colonel Mohammed attributed the increase in the number of traffic accidents on external roads to a number of reasons, most notably the density of traffic on those roads during peak hours in the morning and evening periods, caused by the significant numbers of employees and workers who live outside the city of Abu Dhabi and work in it. “Traffic accidents occur mainly due to high speed, reckless driving, exceeding legal speed limits, illegal overtaking, running red lights and other dangerous violations,” he stated.
He added: “Traffic accidents included collisions, run over accidents and crash accidents. The main reasons for these accidents were sudden turns due to speeding; failing to leave sufficient distance between vehicles; failing to remain in the proper lanes; neglect lack of attention; driving under pressure and tension; and lack of patience which causes motorists to lose control of their vehicles, thus causing fatal accidents.”
Furthermore, Colonel Khamis Ishaq urged employees who reside outside Abu Dhabi to find closer accommodation to avoid the hardship of commuting and driving for long hours to get to work on time. He also advised motorists who come from remote locations, to drive off early to get to work safely.
Concluding, he called on companies that transfer workers to abide by traffic rules, avoid over speeding, leave sufficient distance between vehicles, observe the allowed number of passengers, respect road signs, avoid making sudden turns or risky overtaking to take shortcuts.
