ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Friday, January 24th 2014 [ME NewsWire]
As many as 37,837 individuals from the public and private sectors, as well as from the education sector benefited from 483 traffic awareness lectures organized by the Public Relations Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police during 2013.
In pursuance of the social communication methodology and the Abu Dhabi Police priority goal to make roads safer, the section has broadcasted a total of 947 radio awareness messages, and published approximately 1370 awareness media messages, with a view to enhance traffic safety for all road users.
Lt. Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of the Public Relations Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police stated that the section has conducted an assessment of the campaigns’ outcomes, to be used as criteria to develop further programs. “The Department endeavors to keep abreast of best awareness-raising practices by preparing unconventional programs and using interactive tools to communicate with the public,” Lt. Colonel Al Ameri added.
Furthermore, he praised the cooperation and efforts made by strategic partners to implement those programs and make sure they reach the target groups. Strategic partners include the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC); the Department of Transport; ADNOC Distribution; the Department of Municipal Affairs; Saeed Association to reduce traffic accidents; ICAD; the Abu Dhabi Sports Council; the Family Development Foundation (FDF); and Emirates Transport.
Lt. Colonel Al Ameri highlighted the initiatives carried out by the section to raise awareness among people about driving behavior in foggy conditions, which were implemented in collaboration with the Security Media Department at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. “The section used live broadcasts to urge drivers to reduce speed and exercise caution, which contributed to reducing risks on the roads,” he said.
Lt. Colonel Al Ameri also noted that the 2014 traffic awareness plan includes 12 awareness-raising programs, prepared according to analysis of traffic accidents and violations’ indicators, as well as statistics on society segments most prone to commit such violations, and most common places and times they occur. “These programs aim to promote community interaction so as to spread traffic education throughout society through direct interaction with the target groups at labor camps, as well as in government and private institutions,” Lt. Colonel Al Ameri continued.
Chief of the Public Relations Section also underscored the importance of engaging community members in efforts to raise traffic awareness. This was reflected through the four community-based initiatives launched by the Traffic and Patrols Directorate to support these efforts, namely; the Best School Abiding with Traffic Rules that aims to promote safety standards and traffic awareness level among students; the Best Labor Camp Abiding with Traffic Rules, which aims to raise the level of traffic culture among workers; the Best Family Abiding with Traffic Rules initiative; and the Best Young Driver initiative.
For her part, Captain Aisha Mohammed Al Zaabi, Traffic Awareness Officer at the Public Relations Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police, said that the directorate has received application forms from approximately 25 schools in Abu Dhabi, wishing to participate in the Best School Abiding with Traffic Rules competition. “The competition includes three major categories, notably a traffic-specific research that requires students to prepare a short traffic-related movie, a photo album, and a traffic publication. It also includes a traffic exhibition, and a proposals category to provide an awareness-raising idea aimed at enhancing school students’ awareness,” explained Captain Al Zaabi.
She added: “As part of last year’s program, traffic-related education films were posted on the social networking sites to acquaint people with traffic safety rules, such as road crossing, using seat belts and the golden rule of using the school bus. It also included traffic awareness message broadcasts on the radio to provide traffic safety for students.”
On the other hand, as many as 30 students from three schools (Al Bateen Secondary School - Al Dhabyania Private School - Khadija Al Kubra School) visited the Traffic and patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police. Students were briefed on the available fields of participation in the Best School Abiding by Traffic Rules Initiative, to promote traffic safety. The students also attended a traffic awareness lecture, where they learned about the common causes of traffic accidents, the resulting human and economic losses, as well as the psychological and social effects. Students were also warned against crossing roads at prohibited locations and were given an overview of the golden rule to board and exit the school bus.
