ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Monday, March 3rd 2014 [ME NewsWire]In a ceremony held at the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters today, Lieutenant General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, met 100 traffic safety ambassadors. The chosen ambassadors are locals and residents from all walks of life, and were selected as part of the celebration to mark the 30thedition of GCC Traffic Week, which will kick off next Sunday.
During the meeting, His Highness congratulated the ambassadors that were selected from a group of 2000 people that had applied to become traffic safety ambassadors and wanted to perform this civic duty. He wished them luck and success in carrying out their duties, and thanked them for supporting the efforts to curtail the dangers of traffic accidents. His Highness presented the ambassadors with Traffic safety Ambassadors certificates and took pictures with them.
The meeting was attended by Major General Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior; Brigadier Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri, Director - General of the Headquarters Affairs at Abu Dhabi Police; Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate; Colonel Saud Al Saadi, Director of the Secretariat of the Office of His Highness, the Minister; and a number of officers.
For their part, the ambassadors expressed their happiness for being chosen, promising to rise to the occasion and fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to them to raise traffic awareness among the different segments of society. This will help achieve Abu Dhabi Police’s goal of reaching the highest levels of traffic safety, contribute to preserving this precious country’s progress, gains and achievements, and help it continue its march on the path towards comprehensive development.
Brigadier Al Harithi said: “Selecting these ambassadors is in line with Abu Dhabi Police’s aim of improving traffic awareness and the efforts made by the directorate to save lives, preserve public and private property, and spread traffic awareness among all segments of society.”
He also pointed out that Abu Dhabi Police’s Traffic and Patrols Directorate is changing its traffic safety plan, which has five pillars, and is referred to as (Es+I5): “Engineering, awareness and education; Traffic control; Health; Evaluation; and Community participation”. The directorate is changing it to (Es+I6) by adding a sixth pillar, which is ‘Social partnership’, to emphasize the importance of social responsibility in traffic safety and saving lives and property from the resulting dangers of traffic accidents.
He said: “Adding the pillar of social partnership to the directorate’s plan is a confirmation of its importance, and emphasizes the positive role that cooperation from the private sector, government, and civil society can play in the field of traffic safety.”
Brigadier Al Harithi revealed that the upcoming 30thedition of GCC Traffic Week will witness the launch of a number of new social initiatives that aim to make the whole community work to create and activate traffic campaigns over the course of the year. These initiatives will include 12 traffic safety concepts for each month of the year, which include: “The road belongs to everyone”, “Let us be like them”, “A baby is in your vehicle”, and “You are the backbone of this country”.
He continued: “The new social initiatives will also include ‘the traffic creativity council’, which will invite committees from different walks of life to discuss traffic issues, leading to more cohesion in society regarding traffic issues. There will also be a ‘Traffic safety ambassador’ initiative, which will be responsible for choosing public figures from all fields to serve as traffic safety ambassadors, aiming to reinforce the sense of social responsibility to achieve an ideal traffic safety system”.
He also pointed out that the celebration will include the honoring of exemplary male and female drivers, the honoring of exemplary male and female handicapped drivers, and the honoring of exemplary male and female police officers. The four winners from Abu Dhabi Police’s Traffic and Patrols Directorate’s ‘Together’ program to reduce traffic accidents will also be honored. The “Together” initiative was initially launched to reinforce the role of society in traffic safety, and includes the best school, the best labor camp, the best family, “and the best young driver traffic-wise. The winners will be given appreciation certificates and cash rewards.
