HMC Launches Middle East Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare


Doha, Qatar - Sunday, April 27th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

Hamad Medical Corporation, in partnership with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, a leading innovator in health and health care improvement worldwide, yesterday launched the second annual Middle East Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare at the Qatar National Convention Center.

The forum was officially opened by HMC’s Managing Director Dr. Hanan Al Kuwari and was attended by senior healthcare leaders from Qatar and overseas. Around 3,000 healthcare professionals are expected to attend the three day Forum to learn, collaborate and be inspired to deliver the best patient experience. Delegates will learn about the ‘science of improvement’ including research contributing to the development of tools as well as methodologies designed to enable positive and sustainable change.

Dr. Hanan used her Forum opening speech to reinforce HMC’s role as the leader in quality healthcare improvement in Qatar. She explained the importance of the Forum in providing a platform for knowledge sharing amongst healthcare professionals which would build upon the work of Hamad’s Center for Healthcare Improvement.

The opening ceremony was followed by the first plenary session, delivered by Maureen Bisognano, President and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, who talked about how healthcare professionals can adapt their approach to care by focusing more on the patient’s needs. “Working closely with patients and families can also produce better designs for care,” Ms. Bisognano stated.

HMC’s Acting Chief of Medical, Academic and Research Affairs Professor Michael Richmond also emphasized the importance of the Forum stating: “The theme for this forum is about empowering healthcare professionals and the science of improvement and implementing safest and best healthcare priorities as demonstrated from around the world. We are doing this because we have a duty of care. Our patients have placed their trust in us to care for them in the same way that we would expect to be cared for if we were patients.

Our workforce must be inspired by a vision that aligns its multinational staff with a clear and unambiguous patient centric goal – to deliver a safe clinical journey and ensure that the patient experience is significantly better than they could have anticipated.”

The topics and discussions included in the Forum covered subjects such as Innovation for Driving Improvement, Early Warning Systems: Scorecards that Save Lives, The Role of Leaders in Building a Culture of Continuous Improvement and Leadership Skills for Nurses.

Delegates also heard from keynote speaker Dan Heath, leading author and Senior Fellow from the Duke University CASE School of Business in the USA. Mr. Heath, co-author of Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard, which debuted at number 1 on the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists, also held a lecture similarly titled Switch: How to Change When Change is Hard.  The lecture’s aim was to enable delegates to identify the mechanics of human behavior that could help them identify positive healthcare changes in their own areas of responsibility.
