Brigadier Saif Al Nuaimi: Methodologies achieve effective workplace practices because they constitute a system for the supply of environmentally friendly materials
The Abu Dhabi Police urged suppliers to contribute to the efforts of reducing emissions, power and water consumption, and other non-renewable natural resources. ADP also called upon its suppliers to include recycling within their production processes to reduce damage to the environment and to preserve the efficiency of natural resources.
According to Brigadier Saeed Saif Al Nuaimi, Head of the Procurement and Warehouses Department at Abu Dhabi Police, the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters has set 7 green application approaches for dealing with suppliers. Each of these approaches focuses on the environment, public health and safety, suppliers’ relationship management, electrical appliances maintenance, recycling of materials and commodities, energy conservation, and building or vehicle maintenance.
During his speech at the Environment and Green Applications Forum, organized by Abu Dhabi Police GHQ for its partners, Brigadier Al Nuaimi explained, “Applying these approaches achieves effective practices within the workplace as a clearly defined system that promotes environmentally friendly materials. Integrating them in the everyday activities of all organizational units affiliated with the institution guarantees the success of initiatives, projects, and programs that help achieve the strategic objectives of Abu Dhabi Police. These include implementing operations and activities safely and sustainably in the Abu Dhabi Emirate in partnership with both public and private sector suppliers.”
“The Environment and Green Applications Forum personifies the Ministry of Interior’s vision in developing environmentally friendly, green applications,” Brigadier Al Nuaimi added. “It also falls within the framework of the UAE trends in green development, represented in the UAE’s National Strategy for Green Growth. The national strategy has defined six objectives: fostering economic competitiveness; supporting innovation; attracting investments; creating job opportunities for citizens and providing a sustainable high quality of life; achieving efficient use of natural resources and enhancing economic and national security in areas related to energy and water; and enhancing the country’s international reputation.
Brian Williams, Environment, Health, and Occupational Safety consultant at the Strategy and Performance Development Department of Abu Dhabi Police explained that by considering the environment in the procurement process reduces the adverse effects on environment; and saves costs in general, through the assessment of the environmental efficiency of the supplier. “Suppliers should be environmentally conscious through the application of policies and their own standards of compliance with all legislative requirements and should also obtain the International Organization for Standardization Certificate ‘ISO 14001’,” he said.
Williams also stressed that suppliers must measure air and water emissions into the environment, report their findings in accordance with the requirements of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi. Suppliers must also find new ways to reduce emissions, and the consumption of energy, water and other non-renewable natural resources. Suppliers must also use more efficient packaging methods in order to reduce costs and emissions from using these materials. Furthermore, Williams urged suppliers to reduce, reuse, and recycle materials as part of their production processes. They must also find safe methods for handling hazardous waste by safely storing and disposing of it in accordance with the regulations.
Lieutenant Abdullah Salim Al Mazroui, Occupational Health Branch Manager at the Environment, Health, and Occupational Safety Section at the Strategy and Performance Development Department of Abu Dhabi Police indicated that the distinguished environmental performance of Abu Dhabi Police is clearly demonstrated by the general policy of the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ; the adoption of the Environmental Management and Occupational Safety System; and achieving the Mohammed bin Rashid Government Excellence Award for Distinguished Leadership in the Green Leadership category. He also added that Abu Dhabi Police is working on developing and refining the relationship management with suppliers by sharing the responsibilities of protecting the environment, and by maintaining the health and occupational safety of employees, customers, public, and the environment.
Lieutenant Al Mazroui additionally mentioned that the conditions require the supplier to have an environmental policy in order to determine the indicators and effects of their environmental impact. Suppliers also need to adopt an environmental development program, demonstrate strategies that reduce environmental impacts through reduced energy consumption and conservation of natural resources, and by being more “Environment Friendly.” Additionally, suppliers must declare the content of the used materials and how environmentally friendly the content is.
Fawziya Al Mahmoud, Head of Awareness Department at the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, spoke about the UAE’s keenness to achieve sustainable development and to unify efforts to preserve the environment. She also praised the Abu Dhabi Police for following the Abu Dhabi Government Strategy in their efforts of applying green strategies and environmentally friendly practices, and for continuously encouraging individuals and institutions on achieving sustainability. Additionally, she pointed out to the essential role of the Environment Agency in spreading awareness and issuing guidelines for water consumption and optimal use.
Dr. Shadza Al Jabouri, Senior Consultant of the Awareness Programs at Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi discussed the Environment Agency supervision on factories to reduce emissions, and manage waste in order to protect the environment against pollution. She discussed the overall strategy of waste management in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
