Towards excellence in Public Health

Public health is a core element of all countries attempts to improve and promote the health and welfare of their citizens. Every country needs an effective, comprehensive and suitably resourced public health infrastructure.
The 1st Arab World Conference on Public Health hosted by Dubai Health Authority under the umbrella of World Federation of Public Health Associations from 4th to 6th April 2013 in Dubai will shed light on the importance of public health and the use of new public health approaches for promotion of community health at regional and national levels.
Ms. Laila Al Jassmi, Chairperson of the Arab World Conference on Public Health Steering Committee and CEO of Health Policy and Strategy Sector at Dubai Health Authority said that, it is crucial to strengthen the national public health system and enhance the training and competence of the workforce responsible for public health functions both within and outside the healthcare sector.
“The conference aims to bring leaders in public health from different Arab countries and health experts across the globe to discuss critical issues on public health. The conference will harness the synergy and strengths of innovation and achievements from the developing and developed world and will address the current status of public health services in the Arab world and the enormous challenges and opportunities facing public health organizations in making progress towards collectively attaining excellence”, added Ms. Al Jassmi.
Dubai Health Authority aims to promote the theme of the congress - ‘Towards excellence in Public Health: Opportunities and Challenges in the Arab World’ in order to bring the Arab World together in public health services and in minimizing disparity.
Prof. Tawfik Ahmed Khoja, Director General Executive Board of the Health Ministers’ Council for Cooperation Council States will address, ‘The way forward to Arab Public Health : Vital need of public health laws and systems in the GCC countries’. Public health law is very instrumental in public health. It is the study of the legal powers and duties of the government to assure the conditions for people to be healthy. Law plays a very crucial role in protecting the health of populations, whether the public health threat is pandemic influenza, injury prevention, drugs or tobacco intake, obesity, chronic disease, occupational safety, environmental health or mental health. "There is a vital need for good public health systems and laws in the Gulf countries" said Prof Khoja.
The Arab World Conference on Public Health will be attended by healthcare professionals and public health leaders (WHO, renowned Universities, Government bodies), service providers, NGOs, advocates, trainers and students both locally and internationally.
Abstracts and posters dealing with major issues related to promoting world class public health services, opportunities and threats will be displayed by participants during the course of the congress.
