ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, February 20th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters is participating in the parade from Qasr al Manhal (al Manhal Palace) to Qasr al Hosn in Abu Dhabi today, wearing the official logo and uniform, used in the early days of the Foundation stage in 1957.

“The police and public security history in Abu Dhabi is an essential part of the UAE’s history,” said Colonel Saif Al Shamesi, Chief of the Cultural and Social Activities Section at the Clubs and Sports Activities Department, during the festival. He also explained that the fact that the police are participating in the march (which will be held to welcome the festival sponsor) in their traditional official uniforms helps acquaint people with Abu Dhabi Police’s various stages of establishment. It will also brief people on the tasks and missions of the police officers and guards during that period, who were the basic pillars for the protection of the country and its achievements, in addition to granting security to all citizens, expats, and visitors.

“The festival organizing managers established a police station model that resembles the police department’s building in 1957,” Colonel Saif Al Shamesi added. “The model was set up the north of the Qasr al Hosn, where the department was originally located. The miniature police station will present a scheduled film presentation showcasing the history and progress of the police force, as well as the prominent officers. Police officers, wearing their traditional uniform and logo, will be present onsite, to explain to the public the duties and tasks entrusted to the police in the old days.”

Furthermore, Colonel Al Shamesi noted that the various departments at the General Directorate of Finance and Support Services will be taking part in the festival’s different activities. The Clubs and Sports Activities Department of Abu Dhabi Police will schedule showings of a film about ADP’s history and progress. The Transport and Public Works Department will be providing cars’ inspection and all-inclusive maintenance during the activities. Additionally, the Purchasing and Warehouses Department will tailor traditional uniforms and accessories, while the Directorate General of Guards and Special Tasks at Abu Dhabi Police will assign 22 guards wearing the traditional costumes, in addition to the Police College recruits and the graduated cadets from the 90th batch. The Security Media Department will be taking instant commemorative photos of the police officers in their traditional costumes and the police-related activities that are presented for the public.

Colonel Al Shamesi explained that the festival goers will enjoy seeing the police officers parading in formations, wearing their traditional costumes. Police officers will also demonstrate some mock tasks upon their commander’s orders and take their positions in land and sea locations, and around the markets. The public will also be acquainted with the police’s traditional work system, which includes training on martial arts and combat techniques, as well as the ethics of social behavior, and security and community services.

Abu Dhabi Police’s participation will also include a show demonstrating their traditional patrols, including special patrols and comprehensive patrols. These patrols are considered to be the most prominent and sophisticated forms of advanced police work, both regionally and internationally.

For his part, First Lieutenant Ibrahim Al Hosani, Music Education Acting Branch Manager, noted that the participation falls within the framework of the police’s commitment of keeping up with this grand historical event. The Qasr al Hosn Festival is an annual event and landmark of the cultural movement in the UAE, and to celebrate the Qasr al Hosn, which is a representation of Abu Dhabi’s true identity. Qasr al Hoson is the symbolic birthplace of the capital during the establishing stages; it marks nearly 250 years of Emirati history and the cultural development that the UAE is witnessing.

First Lieutenant Al Hosani announced that the Abu Dhabi Police Music Bandwill give musical performances that include famous national and traditional music pieces highly acclaimed by the public and include: “Kulluna Khalifa”, “Allah Ya Dar Zayed”, “Aala Khalifa Salam”, “Qasr al Hosn”, “Ya Shabab Al Watan”, and “Sout Al Banadeq.”

He also reasserted the Abu Dhabi Police Music Band’s keenness to mark important historic and traditional events in the UAE, in order to promote the band’s principles, which aim to instill a sense of pride, loyalty, and belonging within the police staff’s spirits. “Abu Dhabi Police, as a national institution, has always maintained its historical legacy; it recognizes that today’s achievements complement a series of linked events and a result of diligent efforts of successive  generations of Emirati people, who worked with devotion for the progress of their country.

It is worth mentioning that Abu Dhabi Police has witnessed unprecedented progress s in all fields over the decades since its establishment. This prestigious progress has put the police force in the spotlight. Additionally, Abu Dhabi Police has played an essential and efficient role in Abu Dhabi, by providing the means for stability and security of the homeland and people. To achieve these results, the police depended on various bodies, departments, and sections, in addition to working on economic development and social welfare that the UAE in general, specifically Abu Dhabi, is witnessing.

It is a well-known fact that the first Abu Dhabi Police unit was established in 1957; its duties were almost limited to protecting some sites and locations including the Ruler’s palace (Qasr al Hosn), markets, and banks (only two banks existed at the time). Abu Dhabi Police was also responsible for guarding the ships and vessels that used to sail from neighboring countries, in addition to bringing outlaws to the ruler in cases of disputes and complaints.

In 1957, Abu Dhabi Police only had 150 officers. It was called the “Police Department” and was located north of the Qasr al Hosn, which was the center of Abu Dhabi City at that time. The “Police Department” building consisted of three offices only; one for the Police Commander,  the second for the Assistant Officer and the third for the Deputy Commander. The building also included a small prison cell, residences for police officers, and warehouses that were surrounded by a metal fence.

The Abu Dhabi Police Music Band was established in July 1963. It offers national and traditional performances for the community, and is committed to interact with community members by taking part in social events, out of its firm belief in the importance of music in people’s lives and the need to strengthen the values of traditional heritage.
