Civil Defense Handles 16 Minor Fire Accidents in Abu Dhabi during the Eid Holidays


ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Friday, August 8th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

The Abu Dhabi Civil Defense General Directorate handled 16 minor fire accidents and carried out four rescue missions across Abu Dhabi during Eid El Fitr Holidays, which resulted in the death of an Asian man after an elevator cab unexpectedly fell on him in the Tourist Club Area.

Elaborating on the nature of the calls received, Colonel Juma Salem Al Dahmani, Acting Director of the Civil Defense in Abu Dhabi noted, “Most of the calls were reports of minor fire accidents. Six bedrooms and eight air conditioners took fire in the Musaffah 18 area. Firefighting units from civil defense fire stations M14 and Al Madina were immediately dispatched to location to extinguish the fires, supported by Al Musaffah M33 fire station.”

He added: “A number of fire accidents occurred in the areas of Al Musaffah Industrial Area M23, New Al Wathba, and Al Mafraq hospital. An entire workshop was engulfed by fire, in addition to 13 cars; a power plant, and 32 batteries. Firefighting units from Al Musaffah 14, Al Wathba, and Khalifa B fire stations were dispatched to extinguishe the fires, supported by units from Al Musaffah 33, Mohammed bin Zayed, BaniYas and Khalifa A fire stations. No deaths or injuries were reported in any of these accidents.”

Furthermore, Colonel Al Dahmani indicated that some major fire accidents were also reported, notably the fire that gutted a caravan containing building material in Al Bateen area; a tent in BaniYas East 10 neighborhood, and a small warehouse in Eastern Wathba. “A vehicle took fire on the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway in Al Shahama area, as well as the front section of four vehicles in different areas of Abu Dhabi. Units from Al Wathba, Al Shahama, Al Madina and Al Mussafah fire stations were dispatched to handle the fires,” said Colonel Al Dahmani

Colonel Al Dahmani urged the public to cooperate with the civil defense by immediately reporting any incidents to facilitate the tasks of firefighting and rescue teams in all locations. He also encouraged the public to abide by the prevention and safety requirement. In conclusion, Colonel Al Dahmani urged the public to make way to the civil defense vehicles, avoid crowding accidents’ scenes or park their vehicles in front of fire hydrants.
