Zero-Bleed™ Becker Control Valves from Dresser Will Help the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi Russia Utilize Clean Fuel and Reduce Emissions

HOUSTON, Friday, October 1st 2010 [ME NewsWire]:

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Becker T-Ball control valves from Dresser, a leading manufacturer of highly-engineered products for the natural gas industry, will play a role in efforts to “green” the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

Becker T-Ball control valves, model QTCV-T1, have been selected by Gazprom, the Russian energy giant, for the “city gate” natural gas feed station that will serve the Olympic Village. The city gate feed station is the location at which the natural gas is directed from the main gas transmission pipeline to the smaller lines which will supply the Village.

Designed specifically for use in natural gas applications, the Becker valves have a unique combination of proven technology and environmentally friendly characteristics that made them the only acceptable solution for the feed station’s needs, according to Greg Giernoth, Dresser Marketing Director for Becker Control Valves.

Dresser’s below-ground Becker regulator technology was ideally suited to this installation because of its sound attenuation capabilities, low maintenance design and tight emission controls. The valves’ non-clogging, low-maintenance design allows for below-ground installation which, in turn, provides sound attenuation that is superior to above ground sound management technology. The valves specified for the project are equipped with Becker ZERO BLEED™ Valve Regulator Pilot (VRP) controls. The Becker VRP is the only piece of instrumentation on the market that combines the actions of both the positioner and a controller in a single device. This approach completely eliminates the “fugitive” emissions of the potent greenhouse gas methane that are common with installations utilizing separate positioners and controllers.

Construction of the Olympic Village is just one part of the massive development project underway to ready Sochi, a resort community nestled between the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains, as the site for the 2014 Winter Games. In addition to building all of the competition venues, preparations for the Games include major upgrades to the energy infrastructure necessary to meet the needs of the huge influx of visitors expected for this high-profile international event.

The fragile ecosystem of this pristine, scenic region has spurred efforts to minimize environmental impact of the massive infrastructure development project. Among them are use of cleaner fuels and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
