UAE Cancer Congress Kicks off in Dubai with the Participation of over 750 Doctors and Specialists

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, October 3rd 2013 [ME NewsWire]

On behalf of His Excellency Engineer Essa Al Haj Al Maidoor, Director General of Dubai Health Authority (DHA), Dr. Ahmed bin Kalban, CEO of the Primary Healthcare Sector at the DHA, inaugurated today the UAE Cancer Congress with the participation of over 750 doctors and specialists from countries around the world. The event is held at the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Kalban stressed the increasing importance of the congress in times that are witnessing a rise in the number of cancer patients, noting that the disease is one of the major causes of fatalities globally, and the third in the UAE after heart diseases and accidents. He said that 40% of cancer fatalities can be avoided by prevention and early detection.

The CEO of the Primary Healthcare Sector at the DHA mentioned that World Health Organization (WHO) estimations indicate that the number of global cancer fatalities is expected to rise to 13 million in 2030, comparing to 7.6 million in 2008.

He noted that recent years have realized rapid developments and serious global efforts in fields of diagnosis and treatment of different types of cancerous tumors. He said that despite the efforts made to improve patient treatment and care, the Arab region is still witnessing a significant rise in the numbers of patients suffering from these diseases. This is posing a grand challenge for health institutions to continue their global discoveries, take urgent steps to develop curative practices, and curb the expansion and spread of the disease.

Dr. Kalban highlighted the DHA’s experience in terms of diagnosing and treating cancers; it has succeeded in recent years in establishing specialized centers and units for tumors and hematology. He added that due to the DHA’s realization that the costs of curing these diseases are many times higher than the costs of treating them on time, the specialized centers and units are provided with the latest state-of-the-art equipment, labs, and potentials for diagnosis and early treatment.

In past few years, the DHA has dedicated its efforts to re-shaping and developing the heath scheme in the emirate to elevate it to global standards inspired by scientific advancement and rapid developments. This has helped the DHA to achieve its goals and promote its diagnostic and treatment programs in different diseases including cancerous tumors.

Dr. Shaheenah Dawood, congress president and Head of Medical Oncology at Dubai Hospital, stressed the importance of the event in the light of the rise in cancer patient numbers worldwide noting that networking, communicating, and exchanging experiences are vital elements to promoting the healthcare concept in specializations for cancer patients. She added that this encourages evidence-based medicine to attain best practices when it comes to cancer.

She explained that the congress sessions will include a number of educational and scientific lectures, and interactive discussions about head and neck cancers. She said that elite local and global lecturing doctors will speak at the event including: Drs.   Hope Rugo (USA), Edith Perez (USA), Pierfranco Conte (Italy), and Hamdy Abdul Azim (Egypt).

She said that for the second year, the main program of head and neck cancers will be implemented with the participation of a number of associations such as: the Korean Head Neck Cancer Society, Japan Society for Head & Neck Cancer, the Indian Cooperative Oncology Network, and the Pakistan Head Neck Cancer Society.

The event witnesses dedicated sessions on: proper nutrition for cancer patients, surgical removal of breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, lung cancer, and breast cancer. The nursing program for oncology returns this year with special training courses for male and female nurses focusing on providing the necessary knowledge to improve patient care skills. The sessions will also discuss the role of nurses specialized in oncology in implementing the best practices, and how they can extend to their patients and profession the highest possible level of nursing care.
