(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Smiths Medical, a leading global medical device manufacturer, announced today it tested its new PharmGuard® Interoperability Software at the IHE Connectathon 2014 in Chicago, demonstrating functionality using the IHE Integration Profiles:
DEC - Device Enterprise Communication
IPEC - Infusion Pump Event Communication
ACM - Alert Communication Management
The company’s development and testing with IHE allows for the transfer of infusion data to IHE-compatible EMR – Electronic Medical Records systems from Smiths Medical’s infusion systems. The result will allow a clinician to use an EMR system to automatically capture therapy data for patient records, saving clinicians’ time in daily workflow, increasing documentation accuracy, and improving patient safety by reducing manual data entry errors. Managing alarms is of high concern, and the company has developed alarm reporting capabilities to further increase patient safety.
“Using the IHE® profiles that promote the use of established standards for medical device interoperability allows us to collaborate with other industry partners to develop a standardized method of communicating information and ultimately helps reduce medication errors,” said Tommy Johns, Vice President Global Products.
Infusion systems, such as Smiths Medical’s Medfusion® syringe pumps and CADD® ambulatory infusion pumps, are programmed by clinicians to provide patients with medication according to their therapy needs. The sophisticated systems, which include PharmGuard® medication safety software, allow pharmacists to develop drug libraries according to hospital-defined protocols, deploy the libraries to infusion pumps wirelessly, collect and manage patient therapy data, and track trends in compliance and medication dosing.
Smiths Medical will be participating in the IHE® Interoperability Showcase at HIMSS 14 in Orlando, Florida on February 24, 2014.
