ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Friday, November 20th 2015 [ME NewsWire]
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the Umm Al Quwain Police General Headquarters managed to arrest two individuals in two separate cases for impersonating CID members to carry out thefts.
In the first case, the police arrested a GCC national charged with multiple counts of house thefts and police impersonation.
Elaborating on the details of the case, the police said that they received multiple complaints from people complaining that a man wearing the national costume approached them and stole their belongings, after claiming to be a police officer. The suspect would enter the houses, under the pretext of conducting a warranted search; ultimately steal the wallets of home owners and fleeing the scene. Upon receiving these reports, the police formed a search and investigation team to track down and arrest the suspect.
The CID team managed to identify and arrest the suspect in a short time, based on the descriptions provided by victims, and referred him to the public prosecution after the completion of all legal procedures.
In the second case, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID)’s members were able to arrest another man who impersonated a CID officer to carry out his thefts. The suspect stopped a vehicle and asked the victim to step out, claiming to be a police officer. He searched the vehicle, took the money and asked the victim to follow him to a police station, before fleeing the scene. The suspect was later apprehended by CID members, and was referred to the public prosecution after the completion of all legal procedures.
The Umm AL Quwain Police called upon all members of the community to cooperate with the police when suspecting any case of false police impersonation, by promptly contacting the Operations Room on 999 to provide detailed description of the suspects and their cars. Additionally, the police advised the public to be fully aware of their legal rights and not to give in to any suspicious requests to show their ID cards, unless legal procedures were followed.
