The Emergency Medicine Conference starts on 8 December with Workshops Accredited by the British College

Under the auspices of Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, represented by the Emergency and Public Safety Department at the Directorate General of Central Operations, will be organizing the Emergency Medicine Conference. The conference, which will take place from 8th – 11th December at the Intercontinental Hotel in Abu Dhabi, will be held under the theme “Contemporary Emergency Medicine: Challenges, Solutions and Evidence Based Best Practices”.

The Abu Dhabi Police invited all practitioners, nurse staff, paramedics and emergency workers to participate in the conference, stating that all conference presentations and courses, as well as the six workshops (CME) are accredited by the British Royal College of Surgeons in England.  Major General Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi, General Director of Central Operations at Abu Dhabi Police said that the conference will host some og the world’s elite professors and experts in Emergency Medicine from the Harvard Medical School & Harvard School of Public Health, and the Department of Emergency Medicine of the Oklahoma, Manchester, Dublin and UK Universities. Keynote speakers include Dr Gregory Ciottone, chair of Disaster Medicine Section, Harvard Medical School, and a number of colleagues from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston. Lectures will be delivered by Professor Ron M. Walls, MD, Harvard; Dr Charles Pozner (Harvard); Dr. Paul Biddinger, Director of Operations for Emergency Medicine in Boston and Harvard Medical School; Philip Andersen MD (Harvard); Stephen Thomas, Professor & Chair Department of Emergency Medicine University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine, USA who was a part of Harvard; Dr Gareth Grier, Consultant Emergency in Medicine, London’s Air Ambulance Medical Director; and Dr Amy Hughes, University of Manchester.

Al Raisi indicated that the Emergency Medicine Conference will kick off on December 8 with several pre-conference workshops by medical specialists with topics namely; Emergency Airway Management; Advanced Concepts in Trauma Life Support: The FAST exam; In Flight Emergencies; Surviving Disasters, among Children and other Vulnerable and at Risk Groups: Emergency, Treatment and Mental Health Services in Post Disaster Settings; Communications and Security in Emergency Medicine and Disaster Settings; and Civil Aviation Emergency Medicine. The conference’s official opening ceremony will take place on December 9, 2013.

Major General Al Raisi pointed out that the conference presentations will tackle topics such as Emergency preparedness, and Human Resources Development in the UAE. Attendees will also review the Boston Emergency Medical Services’ (EMS) experience during the Boston marathon bombings.  HE added: “Other topics and work papers included in the conference program are emergency preparedness criteria; Quality Assurance in emergency medicine; the role of EMS in emergency medicine and in injury prevention; stroke care; emergency airway management;, the role of simulation in emergency medicine; lessons learned from the Philippines typhoon; ethical considerations in emergency settings; and the future of emergency medicine care.”

Concluding, Al Raisi noted that the conference represents a great training opportunity for institutions wishing to qualify their personnel in this field.
