The Permanent Higher Commission for Security Media of the Ministry of Interior (MoI) organized a workshop about introducing, applying and enforcing official spokesperson policies and social media use at the MoI. The workshop was held in the auditorium at the Ministry’s headquarters. It was attended by a large number of officers from the media and public relations departments of the Ministry’s various sectors, as well as personnel from the Police General Headquarters in the UAE.
Major Fawaz Ali Abdullah, Director of the Security Media Department at Abu Dhabi Police and President of the Permanent Higher Commission for Security Media, stressed that the methodologies of the Ministry’s committees require laying the groundwork for regulating all aspects of its work. He said that the role of the Commission is to supervise security media affairs and needs regulatory and executive policies to be put in place for the foundations of the media work, in all its forms.
“The Permanent Higher Commission for Security Media anticipates developments in the field of media and prepares proposals that maximize the leverage of these developments to benefit security media work and achieve the ultimate in positive communication with the public, as well as strengthen their trust and consent concerning MoI security performance and services,“ he said.
Major Abdullah added that the setup of both policies is an important requirement in determining work processes in accordance with the MoI’s governing regulations and laws, and to safeguard the privacy involved in the security work, mainly through the use of the MoI’s social media networks, or that of other entities. He also pointed out that the workshop aims to familiarize all workers in the various MoI sectors with the nature of the official spokesperson’s and social media usage policies.
During the workshop, First Lieutenant Hamid Al Dir’e, from the Policies Section at the General Directorate of Strategy and Performance Development, briefly explained the MoI’s work system, and milestones for the development and implementation of both policies in the various sectors of the Ministry. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Ahmed Al Dahmani, from the Security Media Department and member of the Permanent Higher Commission for Security Media, gave a detailed explanation about the policy of the spokesperson and its objectives, and the media controls that monitor and organize how the Ministry deals with various traditional and online media through the spokesperson, both as a matter of course and in cases of accidents and major crimes. In this regard, the MoI relies on transparency and accuracy of information, based on reliable official sources and channels to reflect its high standard of professionalism.
Lieutenant Al Dahmani reviewed the categories of the official spokespersons as per the Cabinet system, as well as the official spokespersons’ categories within the MoI itself. He discussed the role held by the spokespersons, their levels, the conditions to be met by the official spokesperson and the responsibilities that rests on him. He also mentioned the authorities responsible for the policy’s implementation and scope thereof, the laws regulating traditional and electronic dissemination, and the penalties for non-compliance.
In addition, he discussed the policy for using social media networks at the MoI, its objectives and procedures. He also detailed how official social media accounts are being managed at the Ministry and the conditions to be met when creating an official account on one or more social media sites.
Lastly, he pointed to the rules and guidelines that help site managers to take the correct procedures, the responsibilities that lie with the managers of the Ministry’s social media networks, and the rules against the use of both personal and social media sites for all the Ministry’s members, and the penalties for non-compliance with the policy.
