The Open Badminton Tournament, this year, has found the backing of a former badminton player of repute Dr. Nawab Shafi ul Mulk, Director of GHID and Mulk Healthcare Division. Being himself a top shuttler in his heyday, Dr. Mulk said, “I am pleased to present the prestigious Tournament this year, as I had promised to the organisers. I feel badminton is getting more popular in the UAE, with more youngsters take to the game and more world-class players are being featured in local tournaments. I am impressed that some 300 players from the UAE took part in this tournament last year.”
Dr. Mulk was a top player for the Andhra Pradesh badminton team in India in the eighties and was rated among the top eight Indian players from 1981 to 1983, until academics had the better of him. A seat in the medical college forced him to give up his favourite game until he reconnected with badminton three decades later by lending his company’s name to the UAE Open event last year.
The Badminton Organizing Committee is headed by Mr. Sunil Singh and comprising of Mr. Wales Thomas and Mr. Dinesh Nair. “The Tournament is aimed at encouraging and promoting the badminton game among the youngsters, and due to popularity and increasing demand every year, we have retained matches for various categories under the age group of eight to 18 years and Masters or Super Veteran categories. All the matches will be played in line with the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rules and regulations,” said Mr. Sunil Singh.
“The top-ranking Indian players include Anup Sridhar (a former national champion), Harshit Agarwal (runner-up at all-India under-19 badminton last year), Mohit Kamat (a former Prakash Badminton Academy trainee), and Siddharth Thakur (current India No 11). The Malaysian players will be Muhammad Hafiz Hashim (2003 All England champion); Zairul Hafiz Zainudin (ex-national player), Mohamad Razlan Shah (2013 World University quarterfinalist); and Zur Izzuddin Rumsani (junior champion),” Mr. Wales Thomas added.
“As part of India Club’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) drive, the Tournament will continue its exhibition matches this year a well for special needs children and individuals, and players from labour camps in the UAE. Mementos and certificates will be awarded to the participants in these categories. Last year, about 600 entries were registered and a record number of 574 matches were played by participants from India, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the UK, Bahrain, Belgium, Malaysia, Singapore and Germany besides the local Indian and Pakistani expats in the UAE,” Mr. Dinesh Nair elaborated.
