The Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate indicated that a total of 21,962 vehicles were seized during the first half of 2013 for using expired tires. The use of faulty worn-out tires increases the risks of tires bursting, thus causing serious traffic accidents which can lead to deaths and severe injuries.
Colonel Hamad Nasser Al Bloushi, Head of Peripheral Regions Traffic Department at Abu Dhabi Police, called on motorists to check the validity and good condition of their vehicles’ tires, and to replace worn-out or faulty tires, to avoid tire bursts which can lead to injuries and loss of lives. “This comes in line with the awareness-raising programs, as part of the ‘summer without accidents’ campaign launched by the Ministry of Interior, to reduce traffic accidents. It also embodies the Traffic and Patrols Directorate’s strategy, which stems out of the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ key objective to make streets safer,” he stated.
Al Bloushi stressed the need for motorists to inspect the vehicles’ tires before going out on the road, as well as the spare tire. They should also check tire pressure using reliable equipment and make sure the spare tire is in good condition. He added that high speed and friction between the tires and the road cause tires to overheat and explode.
Concluding, Al Bloushi urged motorists to ensure the safety and serviceability of the tires, not rely on their appearance, and make sure to choose the right tire for the vehicles’ speed and power. “Use of expired faulty tires is a traffic offense which entails a one-week seizure of the vehicle and a AED 200 fine,” he noted.
He then warned motorists who change their vehicles’ tires against leaving the damaged tires on internal and external roads, forming obstacles leading to traffic accidents when road users attempt to avoid them.
