In Cooperation with Umm Al Arab Elementary School
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, April 21st 2016 [ME NewsWire]
The Community Police Section at the Khalifa Police Station in the Abu Dhabi Police Peripheral Regions Directorate participated in a campaign at Yas Mall under the theme “Don’t Use Your Mobile Phone While Driving”. This campaign is implemented by Umm Al Arab Elementary School in Abu Dhabi, in cooperation with the Traffic and Patrols Branch at the station.
As a part of the campaign, a number of school students distributed awareness brochures to the public. The brochures include advice to motorists, calling upon them to refrain from this objectionable behavior that can lead to unwanted consequences and serious traffic accidents; because using the mobile phone while driving is a dangerous distraction that draws drivers' attention away from the road.
Captain Salem Suhail Al Ameri, Head of the Community Police Section at the Khalifa Police Station, stressed the Community Police’s keenness to communicate with both its partners and the civil community to implement events and activities that could enhance awareness about social and police matters.
He said: “Using a mobile phone while driving is highly distracting and extremely dangerous. Traffic crashes, involving both injuries and fatalities, are increasingly being caused in part by drivers using their cell phones to read or write a text message. Talking on a mobile phone while driving may cause lapses of attention, concentration and judgment. It causes drivers to take their eyes off the road or their hands off the steering wheel often, to see who is calling and pressing a button to answer the call.”
Captain Al Ameri also noted that drivers’ lives are too precious to be wasted on a phone call or text message, because it can take less than two seconds for an accident to occur.
Captain Al Ameri indicated that the Community Police team played a direct and efficient role in the campaign by distributing awareness and guidance brochures. The team, which included Sergeant Khalfan Saleh Al Qassibi and Sergeant Amal Khamis Al Shamesi, also distributed questionnaires, designed to evaluate the campaign’s impacts and collect feedback from community members.
For her part, Jehan Al Shahat, National Education Specialist at the school, noted that students expressed their wish to contribute to the efforts exerted to enhance awareness about community and traffic matters. She said: “Students expressed their dismay at the negative impacts of using the mobile phone while driving.” She also stressed the importance of the police’s interaction and participation in this event, due to the fundamental and valuable role played by the police institution as a cornerstone of community awareness.
Sahab Al Rifai, Social Care Specialist at the school, explained that students expressed their resentment and discontent with traffic accidents caused by drivers using mobile phones while driving. She then added that they benefitted from the special education offered by the Community Police.
