4,930 Overtaking Offences Detected by Radars and Surveillance Cameras in 4 Months
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, May 17th 2014 [ME NewsWire]
Brigadier
Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of Traffic and Patrols
Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, warned motorists that they will face
severe penalties for overtaking on the hard shoulder of the road.
Brigadier
Eng. Al Harithi said: “This measure falls in line with the Federal
Traffic Law number 21/1995. According to this, any violation of the
provisions of the law such as overtaking on the hard shoulder is
punishable by up to 1 month imprisonment according to article (57) of
the Traffic Law and incurs 10 black points (six points for overtaking on
the hard shoulder and four points for not giving way to emergency,
police and public service vehicles).”
Adding further, Brigadier
Eng. Al Harithi said: "Overtaking on the hard shoulder of the road is a
dangerous driving behavior that poses a risk to people's lives. The hard
shoulder was designed to be used in cases of emergency and accidents
and should be left free for ambulances transporting sick and injured
people, in addition to civil defense and police vehicles to ensure their
timely arrival to accidents’ sites to provide aid and assistance in
cases of emergency.”
Brigadier Eng. Al Harithi noted that the
directorate has intensified traffic control on internal and external
roads to capture hard shoulder motorists. This comes in line with a
comprehensive campaign organized in coordination with the joint Safety
and Traffic Solutions Committee to increase awareness on the risks of
overtaking these lanes. "Driving on hard shoulder lanes or using them to
overtake will obstruct traffic and hinder the humanitarian and urgent
duties of emergency, ambulance, civil defense and police vehicles," he
pointed out.
Brigadier Eng. Al Harithi also noted that hard
shoulder overtaking violations issued by traffic patrols and the Traffic
Investigation Section at the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols
Directorate amounted to 4,930 violations, captured by radars and
surveillance cameras on Abu Dhabi's internal and external roads during
the past 4 months
It is worth mentioning that radars and
surveillance cameras on Abu Dhabi City's intersections capture hard
should overtaking violations, in addition to red light signal jumping
violations; incorrect use of traffic lanes; stopping vehicles on
pedestrian crossing; exceeding speed limits; as well as violations by
motorists who illegally overtake other vehicles at intersections,
vehicles that make impermissible turns or U-turns to the left from the
wrong lane.
