ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Tuesday, August 6th 2013
The Abu Dhabi Police managed to arrest a five-member Pakistani gang; two of whom robbed a young Emirati national under duress, in the Khalidiya region, Abu Dhabi, after leaving the bank, before fleeing the scene.

According to preliminary investigations, the main suspects caught the victim “F.A” (24 years old) off guard as she was leaving the bank. One of them attacked her from behind, covered her eyes with a ghutrah (scarf) and gagged her to prevent her from screaming for help. . In the meantime, the other mugger snatched her phone and purse (which contains cash, credit cards and other documents), causing her to lose balance and fall to the ground, before they fled the scene, taking cover in the neighboring buildings.

Colonel Dr. Rashid Mohammad Borshid , Head of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) noted that the Police mobilized  its task forces upon receiving the victim’s call. Colonel Borshid lauded the victim for quickly reporting the incident, thus allowing the police to catch the gang members and prevent them from targeting other victims.

“Extensive search and investigation efforts were carried out to identify the perpetrators; given that their cowardly method of targeting the women in broad daylight indicates a serious criminal behavior. It also represents a grave provocative act that should be deterred, as it was committed during the auspicious month of Ramadan”, added Colonel Dr. Borshid.

“The concerted police and community efforts allowed identification and arrest of the perpetrators of the crime that occurred on the morning of July 28th,” noted Colonel Borshid.

Head of the Criminal Investigation Department at Abu Dhabi Police explained that preliminary investigations showed that the two primary suspects are workers in the private sector facilities. “Dhahir B.” (25 years old), attacked the citizen (victim) from behind; while his accomplice, “Khawar M.” (21 years old), stole her purse under duress. He added that the culprits had been stalking the victim in front of the bank; aided by their three accomplices, thinking that she has a substantial amount of money in her possession (it later appeared that the amount does not exceed AED 1300). Colonel Borshid also pointed out the five-member gang is specialized in tracking down weak and vulnerable young women or elderly people, as they leave the bank, and in snatching the envelopes or handbags from their hands.

During interrogation, the culprits confessed to being involved in robbing bank customers under duress. They were referred to the competent authorities for further investigation and to await the legal actions filed against them.  “The Abu Dhabi Police is highly competent and ready to deal efficiently with bank customers’ robbers, in an effort to curtail this trend,” emphasized Colonel Borshid.

“We reassure the public that thanks to the support of our Leadership, we will always be ready to nab any night or day “bandit”, who dares to intimidate people or compromise their security and safety”, commented Colonel Borshid.

It is noteworthy that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), had previously launched two media and community-based campaigns to protect bank customers. The two campaigns warned community members against surprise thefts and shed light on the various innovative methods used in the robberies. They also provided the preventive and safety measures to be followed when withdrawing and transferring big cash amounts, to prevent robberies and stay safe.
