LISBON, Portugal - Saturday, May 24th 2014 [ME NewsWire]
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The world premiere of the UEFA Champions League movie drew massive crowds at the UEFA Champions League Festival last night. The 25-minute film celebrates some of the most dramatic moments in the history of the world's most prestigious club competition since the first European Champion Clubs' Cup was contested in 1955/56.
One of the highlights of the screening was the homage to Eusebio. The former Portugal international and European Champions Club winner with SL Benfica recently passed away, and is still a major figure in Portuguese football.
Former players Steve McManaman, Pedrag Mijatovic and Christian Karembeu were there to witness the premiere.
Orchestra Geração was on hand for the build-up to the movie premiere. The 100 piece youth orchestra were joined by a 40 strong choir, who closed their performance with a spectacular rendition of the UEFA Champions League anthem.
The UEFA Ultimate Champions Match takes place this afternoon. 23-year-old Lisbon resident David Pereira has been chosen to join the UEFA All-Stars team for the legends' encounter. When the All-Stars – featuring the likes of Michael Laudrup, Fabio Cannavaro and Fernando Hierro – found themselves short of a goalkeeper for the big game, fans were invited to send in short video clips explaining why they should be selected to play in today's game at the UEFA Champions Festival. Vítor Baía and Peter Schemeichel were handed the tricky task of deciding who would be the best fan for the job.
“I’m really happy to have been chosen” said David. “At last night’s training session I was telling my mates I wasn’t expecting to get the call, so getting the chance to play in the UEFA Ultimate Champions Match is absolutely amazing”.
UEFA Champions Festival activities continue tomorrow in Praça do Comércio, in Lisbon, Portugal.
