ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, April 2nd 2014 [ME NewsWire]
Through its pavilion at the International Exhibition for Security and National Resilience (ISNR Abu Dhabi 2014), the MoI Child Protection Center has provided participants and visitors with the opportunity to get acquainted with its projects, which were listed among the final nominees for the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) Awards. Both projects have successfully passed the first and second levels of the qualification rounds. The Center urged the public to cast their vote for the center, by following the steps listed on the following link: http://www.moi-cpc.gov.ae.
Lieutenant Colonel Faisal Mohammed Al Shammari, Director of the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Center, said that all those wishing to vote for the center are being acquainted with the two projects at ISNR Abu Dhabi 2014. The center had participated with the two projects, among a total of 10 participating projects that are representing the UAE in the competition, which features 18 categories that are directly linked to the WSIS Action Lines outlined in the Geneva Plan of Action. The projects aim to assert the importance of the international exchange of best practices, and encourage participants to submit their projects to WSIS, as an integral part of the evaluation process.
He added: “The Child Protection Center had chosen to participate in the competition under the fifth category, which is related to “Building confidence and security in the use of ICTs”. For this category, the Child Protection Center has submitted the Smartphone Application “HEMAYATI”. The Child Protection Center is also participating under the 18th category that is concerned with “International and Regional Cooperation” with the project of: “The 5th Biennial VGT Conference, under the theme: Combating Online Sexual Exploitation of Children with International Cooperation as an Enabler of Protection”.
Moreover, Lieutenant Colonel Al Shammari stressed the MoI Child Protection Center’s commitment to enhance cooperation with civil society institutions and media entities in the UAE, to promote the crime prevention culture to protect children against potential crimes and to help strengthen society by implementing international best practices, with a view to promoting children’s safety in the UAE and worldwide.
The Security Media Department at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior has urged the public to reinforce its participation in the competition by extensively voting for both projects; noting that the submitted projects are receiving votes from all over the world. “The importance of voting will be seen when the winning projects are referred to in the future as Emirati experiments that were pioneering projects internationally,” said Lieutenant Colonel Al Shammari.
It is worth mentioning the “Hemayati” application was recently launched by the Ministry of Interior following the instructions of the higher leadership, to ensure children’s safety and provide them with the necessary protection. It enables parents to keep track of their children’s whereabouts and specify the times of their arrival and departure from school, or when they are late. It also allows parents to communicate with their children at all times, in addition to providing a built-in SOS feature, enabling children to send distress calls to their parents when they feel threatened. The application can be downloaded for free on smartphones and is exclusively available in the UAE. It can only be activated by parents in order to determine their children’s whereabouts should they go missing. The application is one the Ministry of Interior’s recently launched e-services, which include 169 e-services via its website and 30 smart services via mobile phones.
