Supporting motherhood and childhood is a guaranteed investment
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, March 23rd 2014 [ME NewsWire]
Psychological
and pedagogical specialists have collectively stressed the importance
of unifying both family and civil society institutions’ efforts to
protect children, by fulfilling their basic needs and surrounding them
with security and safety, acquainting them with their friends and
communicating with schools, and monitoring their nannies closely when
they leave their kids alone with them, and educating mothers on how to
handle their children and care for them.
They said that the
absence of the role of the family, their high-handedness and lack of
monitoring, creates a child with vindictive tendencies and no regard for
the law. They see that a parent’s lenient upbringing can cause the
child to be careless and follow friends who are a bad influence.
Overindulgence or excessive cruelty may make the child careless and be
the cause of not developing social skills within their peer groups.
They
considered the efforts of Abu Dhabi Police in encouraging awareness in
families and civil society associations to be a step that helps to plant
the seeds of good behavior in young people, so that they follow the
right path and stay away from bad company.
They confirmed the
integrative role that starts with the household and ends with the
different state institutions. On the other hand, Brigadier Najim
Abdullah Al Hosani, Director of the Social Support Centers Department of
Abu Dhabi Police, says: “The world is witnessing fast changes in the
areas of education, civilization and technology. Both individuals and
associations are responsible of keeping up with these changes”. He
added: “The UAE is a pioneer and a leader in providing support to all
segments of society to help individuals to live in a family-oriented,
interconnected environment and a healthy social atmosphere, based on
compassion, harmony and mercy, in a way that provides the community with
positive values that help to protect it and keep it away from
delinquency, and drifting towards crime.”
He said that the
conference that was organized by Abu Dhabi Police recently under the
slogan “The Family…Prevention and Protection”, embodies its role and
care in motherhood and childhood, as they are considered to be some of
the key pillars of society. He said that supporting them is the best
investment that brings guaranteed benefits to individuals and society
and provides the highest standards of security and protection for them.
A healthy environment
Dr.
Maha Ahmed Abdel Halim, a psychologist, spoke about the role of the
family in child protection and doing so by fulfilling their basic needs,
like making them feeling safe and secure, which provides a healthy
environment that children can use to protect themselves and to know
their rights and obligations. She added that when the roles are
integrated, the child can gain new skills that support their position
and help to protect them from bad behavior that will hold them
accountable.
She attributed the reasons that lead children into
crime; the lack of the integrated role of the family, lack of
supervision and follow up, lack of stimulation with reward and
punishment for the child, and the diversity of upbringing methods. She
believes that a dominant family will raise a vindictive child, that does
not abide by the laws, while a lenient family can raise a careless
child, which makes it easier for them to associate with bad company, and
fall into crime.
Educational Awareness
Milan Sharif, the
legal researcher from the Law Respect Culture Bureau at the General
Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of
Interior, discussed the importance of parents’ educational awareness,
and the methods of handling the child at different ages, through
specific scientific guidelines. She pointed to the importance of
preparing mothers for this task beforehand, along with the integrated
role of civil society institutions to provide awareness programs for the
mothers whom are still handling their children by instinct, and through
goodwill are still subjected to fatal errors. Scientific education
reduces the mother’s effort significantly, and provides a positive
outcome to the child’s behavior.
She said that the mother in most
cases cannot punish a child in the early stages due to the lack of
cognitive abilities that cause children to develop habits that could
lead them to crime, like being dishonest and violent. By spoiling the
child excessively or being cruel to it, the child will suffer from
under-developed social intelligence skills. She pointed out that when a
child becomes anti-social with no respect for laws or customs, is a very
dangerous stage that may lead the child to crime that can harm society.
This can happen in the absence of father figure, who thinks that his
role is only financial, forgetting his duties in forming the child’s
conscious.
Meanwhile, Alaa Qeshta, a teacher, said that the
educational and emotional communication between school and home,
especially between a teacher and a student, nurtures morals and
educational values. She noted that both family and schools should ensure
proper nutrition because this affects the child’s behavior.
Sohaila
Samhan, an education specialist, stressed the importance of constant
parental supervision on children, and getting to know all their friends
and people who deal with them directly. She emphasized the importance of
constant communication between parents and schools, especially because
most of children’s problems occur in school. The child may be subjected
to persecution or abuse by his friends while the parents are unaware.
They may also be leaving the task of educating to the nanny, where the
child will be subjected to a different culture, or will be abused
because the nanny is not well trained and is not capable of taking care
of the child.
She said that the child should be aware of how to
react during certain situations, and should also be aware of boundaries
and limits, which include not going off with strangers, notifying their
parents about their whereabouts. If the child is left with a nanny, they
should be monitored closely, while keeping a close eye on any changes
that may occur in the child.
