Al Ain Police Arrest 44 Beggars during Ramadan

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, August 2nd 2014 [ME NewsWire]

According to Brigadier Hamad Ajlan Al Amimi, Director of the Al Ain Police Directorate, the directorate has arrested 44 beggars during Ramadan in possession of wads of cash of several foreign currencies. He explained that the detained beggars resorted to different means and tricks to entreat money such as selling Quran and prayer brochures, and requesting alms from pedestrians and motorists by showing fake medical reports on fake medical condition, to exploit their sympathy.

Brigadier Al Amimi called upon citizens and residents to assume their societal responsibility and contribute to the endeavors undertaken by the police by reporting beggars who crowd in markets or in front of houses by calling the Operations Room on (999), via the Aman service on 8002626 which receives information confidentially, or via text on 2828.

"Begging is a serious problem that affects several communities; it also poses a security, social and cultural threat , as some beggars commit crimes such as robberies, fraud,  and moral crimes, under the garb of begging," he said. Adding further, Brigadier Al Amimi noted that the police are on the lookout for beggars to curb this uncivilized practice.  “Police teams have been deployed across the city to monitor markets, residential areas and mosques. These measures complement the security awareness campaign undertaken by Abu Dhabi Police through the “Together… against Begging” initiative to educate community members and warn them against beggars so that they contribute to the efforts to stamp out this objectionable practice.

It is worth mentioning that Abu Dhabi Police had recently launched a media and community outreach initiative under the slogan “Together… against Begging.” This campaign aims to raise awareness about the growing risks of obliging beggars whose numbers seem to peak particularly before and during the holy month of Ramadan and the Eid Al Fitr holidays. This initiative is carried out by the Security Media Department at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, as part of the “Your Safety” campaign. These awareness drives are carried out in collaboration between different police and security authorities within the UAE to eradicate this negative phenomenon.
