On
Sunday, the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police took
part in a forum for the 40th Arab Deaf Week which was held at the Dalma
Mall in Abu Dhabi. The forum, which was organized by the Zayed Higher
Organization for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs, is in line with
the traffic awareness programs that aim to enhance communication with
the segment of society that consists of persons with special needs.
Colonel
Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of the Public Relations Section at the
Traffic and Patrols Directorate, Abu Dhabi Police; stressed the
importance of communication with this important segment which falls
within the ‘Plants of Hope’ initiative. The initiative was launched by
Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister
and Minister of Interior, as one of the humanitarian initiatives for
children with special needs in a bid to raise their awareness regarding
traffic guidelines in order to protect them against traffic-related
accidents.
He pointed out that the annual forum for
students with hearing disabilities has been organized within the 40th
Arab Deaf Week, and included traffic information and competitions. The
traffic awareness performances were all translated with sign language.
By contributing to the development of traffic knowledge for students
with hearing disabilities, the activities of the Arab Deaf Week provide
deaf persons with the safety and means to protect themselves from
traffic accidents while additionally enabling them to become more
integrated within the community.
Colonel Al Ameri
praised the participation of the segment of society that consists of
persons with special needs and their role in supporting the efforts of
the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police. The directorate
is committed to conducting various awareness activities that aim to
enhance the level of traffic culture throughout the community.
He
concluded by urging every driver to pay attention to this important
segment, to reduce their speeds, to give priority to persons with
disabilities by allowing them to cross the street first, and to leave
the designated parking spots for disabled persons open and available for
those who need them. He pointed out that illegally parking in the
designated parking spots for disabled persons will result in an
infraction punishable by a fine of 1,000 Dhs and four black points.
