57 Accidents in 10 Months: 3 Killed and 5 Injured
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Monday, January 6th 2014
The Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate has warned motorists against driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, stressing that it will increase the number of patrols and traffic officers on both internal and external roads. The patrols’ mission is to spot any drunk drivers and motorists who drive their cars under the influence of drugs or any kind of intoxicants. The campaign reflects the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters’ safety strategy, which will make roads safer and will diminish the causes of accidents that result in deaths and severe injuries.
Brigadier Engineer Hussain Ahmad Al Harthi, Director of Traffic and Patrol Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, pointed out the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol, narcotics or any other intoxicants, and said that drunk drivers are not fully conscious, lack concentration and are unable to drive their cars safely and watch out for possible hazards and react properly in emergency situations. He said that these motorists are highly prone to accidents that lead to deaths and injuries.
Al Harthi stressed the importance of consciousness and concentration and warned drivers against sitting behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, any other intoxicants, painkillers or sedatives. Such chemicals tend to reduce the level of awareness and perception and prohibit the driver from identifying dimensions properly, which increases the chances of misjudgment and poses a threat to others on the road.
“During the first ten month of 3013, from January to October 31st, there were about 57 reported accidents which resulted in three deaths and five serious injuries. Between the years 2010- 2012, driving under the influence of alcohol, narcotics or any other intoxicants resulted in 219 accidents, 23 deaths, and 36 serious injuries ,” said Al Harthi.
The Brigadier Engineer declared that motorists driving under the influence will be dealt with strictly and shall be prosecuted, as their cars will be confiscated for two months and their licenses will be suspended. “Safe driving requires full awareness, consciousness and the ability to quickly respond to any unexpected dangers on the road.”
Al Harthi praised the attention of the Ministry of Interior, which enacted relative legislation, and made efforts to face motorists who drive under the influence. The Ministry of Interior has considered the dangers that such conduct has on road safety, health, society, and the economy.
He pointed to the extensive efforts reflected in the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate’s “Together” program and in the road awareness lectures that promote the concept of driving safely among all segments of society, especially among the younger generations, who attend driving related lectures and exhibitions. With these efforts, the Ministry of Interior seeks to spare our children from the dangers of driving under the influence.
Al Harthi called on parents to monitor their children’s behavior and their driving patterns in order to protect them against the dangers of peer pressure and help them maintain their safety and avoid any legal responsibilities. He advised people not to get behind the wheel after taking any medications that lead to drowsiness, and urged those who have psychological problems to not drive if they cannot concentrate properly.
