Abu Dhabi Traffic and Mawaqif Allow Payment of Fines by Installments

Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al HarithiStarting Sunday and for Three Months

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, May 31st 2014 [ME NewsWire]

The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police and the Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi announced that traffic fines and the DoT’s violations, “Mawaqif” on expired vehicles licenses can be paid in installments, starting tomorrow, Sunday June 1st and up to August 31st. This initiative is part of the efforts aimed at easing the burdens on community members, citizens and residents alike, and granting them the opportunity to avoid failure-to-pay penalties accumulated against their vehicles through the Federal Traffic and Licensing System.

Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, informed that all fines payment branches at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate and Vehicles and Drivers Licensing Department in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Western Region will grant motorists the opportunity to clear off the traffic or Mawaqif fines on their record (provided that the minimum number of violations is no less than two, and the combined value of the two fines is AED 1000). The total fines can be paid in two.

Brigadier Al Harithi stressed that neither Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters nor the Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi are happy to issue violation tickets whatsoever. He also noted that allowing motorists to pay their fines in two installments (50% of all traffic violations and “Mawaqif” penalties paid separately to each authority) will encourage them to be more compliant with the laws and regulations aimed at maintaining their safety.

For his part, Mohammed Hamad Al Muhairi, Director General of Mawaqif at the Department of Transport, Abu Dhabi, explained that this decision is part DoT and Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate’s commitment to ease traffic fine payments, help motorists clear off unpaid traffic fines and renew their vehicles’ license easily. It also encourages motorists to observe the law and to not accumulate too many fines for long periods of time.

Adding further, Al Muhairi said: “Mawaqif doors are always open to allow members of the public to submit their queries, grievances, complaints and opinions regarding their violations. A dedicated specialized committee examines all grievances, renders its judgment and responds to the public’s grievances within a short period of time, to allow them to renew their vehicles’ licenses without delay.”

According to the decision issued by Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate and the Department of Transport (DoT), the decision only applies to traffic fines issued to vehicles owned by individuals; payment in installments is not available for vehicles owned by companies or organizations. . The installments scheme can be used to pay off traffic fines for vehicles registered in the UAE and does not cover cars with foreign, export, or temporary number plates.

Al Muhairi added: “The vehicle owner must pay all traffic fines he owes to the UAE emirates, the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai, the municipalities of both the UAE and GCC countries. He also needs to pay 50% of the total of Abu Dhabi Traffic Department’s violations and Mawaqif penalties upfront, provided that he settles the remaining 50% of the amount during one year.”

Al Muhairi continued: “Motorists, who wish to sell, export, issue a tourist round trip certificate, or transfer the car within the UAE, must first settle all remaining traffic fines. The installments scheme also allows people who own two vehicles with expired licenses and traffic fines, to pay the fines incurred by one of the vehicles and renew its license, without having to do so for the second vehicle.”
