Short-story Competition for Drug Case Inmates Launched as a Part of “They Fooled Me” Campaign

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, June 29th 2014 [ME NewsWire]
As a part of the “They Fooled Me” campaign, the Security Media Department at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior launched a competition for inmates in Punitive and Correctional Establishments country wide. Inmates who have been convicted of drug related cases are invited to write short stories about their anguish and tragedy of drugs, and how they subsequently ended up behind bars.

The story should reflect the inmates’ realities, how their environments have influenced them, and the implications their addiction has had on their family and society. The story will also cover life in prison, the lessons learned, and a message to members of society to avoid becoming victims of drug abuse.

The person behind the idea, Alia Atiq Al Rumaithi, Radio Branch Manager at the Security Media Department, said “During our visits to the Punitive and Correctional Establishments, and after talking to a number of inmates convicted of drug offences, we noticed that they wanted to utilize their creative abilities and communicate their stories of suffering and struggle with drugs. So, the idea came to organize the short story competition where the inmates can be the authors and heroes.”

The last date to receive participating stories is July 7, 2014, as set by the Security Media Department. Stories can be submitted by fax to the numbers: 024194580 or 024194454. The names of the winners will be announced by mid-July and the top three winners will receive valuable prizes.
