Colonel Rashid Saeed Al Qaishi, from the General Directorate of Federal Criminal Police at the Ministry of Interior, headed the United Arab Emirates delegation to the Seventeenth Arab Conference of Counterterrorism that concluded today, Thursday in Tunisia.

After discussing a number of topics including the Arab strategy of countering terrorism and the effects of social networks, the Conference recommended fostering Arab cooperation in countering terrorism. The Conference was held under the General Secretariat of the Arab Interior Ministers Council.

The Conference was attended by a number of representatives of the various Arab Ministries of Interiors; in addition to the Arab League and Union of Arab Banks "UAB", the International Criminal Police Organization "INTERPOL", and Naif Arab University for Security Sciences.

The attendee stressed on solving the poverty issue as it is the fertile soil for terrorism. They also highlighted the importance of taking care of the financially week segments of society to prevent its members from being recruited by terrorist groups.

The Conference also called the member countries to intensify monitoring and control processes over the various economic activities to deprive the terrorist gangs and organizations from channeling their financial resources to support their destructive activities.

It also called upon the member countries to adopt a comprehensive national policy, including the legislative, security, and awareness aspects, to stop its citizens from traveling to the warzones.

Regarding the effect of social networks on the growth of the terrorist ideologies, the Conference urged the competent authorities in the member countries to prepare special awareness programs that target the children and youth of social networks users. These programs should raise awareness about social networks usage and the methods used by terrorist groups to recruit members to participate in their activities.

Additionally, the Conference encouraged the member countries which did not join the Arab, regional, and international treaties on countering terrorism to join them.

Furthermore, the Conference called for formulating an Arab protocol to limit the spread of weapons in the Arab world, and formulating an Arab treaty to counter illegal interventions against the security and safety of aviation.

The Conference also agreed on the amended version of the Arab Strategy for Countering Terrorism, and recommended publicizing and benefiting of the successful Arab experiences in this field.

It is expected that these recommendations to be discussed during the next session of the Arab Interior Ministers Council to consider approving it.
