ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, August 18th 2013
The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police called for motorists to commit to using seat belts via the traffic awareness programs for the month of August. These traffic awareness programs embody the strategy of the Ministry of Interior to provide traffic safety for community members. It also reiterates the Abu Dhabi Police’s commitment to strengthen traffic security and the safety of individuals through the implementation of a comprehensive traffic awareness plan to enhance society’s traffic culture level.
Colonel Khamis Ishaq Mohammed, Deputy Director of the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate said: “The Traffic and Patrols Directorate issued 52,324 violations to individuals for failure to fasten seat belts in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi during the period of 1 January to 31 July. The goal of issuing these fines, whether for the driver or passengers, is to maintain their safety and prevent injuries and deaths that would otherwise result from failure to fasten belts.”
He urged motorists to fasten their seat belts while driving and advised the passengers to use the belt regardless of the traveling distance. He reiterated how effective seat belts are in protecting drivers and passengers during collisions; the seat belts absorb the momentum of the driver and his companions greatly reducing injury from impact and fatalities. He indicated that failure to fasten safety belts can result in fines of up to 400 dirhams in addition to four traffic points. He pointed out that the Traffic and Patrols never gains from implementing fines, as it aims to ensure the people’s safety and preserve public property; often a violation is behind every traffic accident.
Colonel Khamis Ishaq stressed the importance of children sitting in child seats in the back seat of the vehicle. He emphasized the importance of having seats for children urging that every vehicle carrying children has a car seat to safeguard them. He pointed out that a number of motorists and families are not aware of the importance of these child car seats, letting their children move freely inside the car.
Colonel Khamis Ishaq called upon all drivers to take care and fasten seat belts in order to protect themselves while driving; he further pointed out that the plan of the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate ensures traffic safety for all road users by intensifying efforts to apprehend federal traffic law offenders on internal and external roads.
