About the perfumer

Aurélien Guichard / Givaudanwas born in Grasse in the tradition of high perfumery. He entered the School of Perfumery in 1997 and joined the Fine Fragrance team in Paris immediately thereafter. One year after developing DAVIDOFF Champion, Aurélien Guichard / Givaudan creates DAVIDOFF Champion Energy.

About the campaign Director

Oscar-nominated® director Sean Ellis is the TV Spot Director for DAVIDOFF Champion Energy. He has worked with magazines such as The Face, Numero and Vogue. He has also directed commercials for Land Rover, Rimmel, 02 and Nike among others.

Sean Ellis has written and directed three short films including Voyage d’Affaire (2008), which was nominated for a 2008 British Academy of Film and Television (BAFTA) award. After the movie Cashback (2006), he directed The Brøken (2008), a psychological thriller that stars Lena Headey and Oscar nominated actor Richard Jenkins.

About the model

The model is Tyler Wood, a well-known California-based model that works for editorial, commercial print and runways. His biggest campaigns were for Calvin Klein and Abercrombie & Fitch. He is the featured model in the opening credits of the VH1 series The Agency.

When does the athlete need to focus his energy?

If you are thinking about your energy at the beginning of the competition, you’re probably too late. You should have been thinking about it for at least a few days. You need energy at the start, and you should have planned and prepared so that you have enough energy to make it through the competition with reserves to help you go long and finish strong. For instance, during a marathon, you want to make sure you’re fuelling as you go because it’s such a long duration, between 2 or 3 hours at high level competition.

Could you give us an advice to get more energy?

To me, energy means having enough fuel to do everything that I want to do and everything that presents itself to me during the day. A United States government panel recommended exercising 60-90 minutes a day to stay in good health, the key is to “do something all the time.” You can’t exercise Saturday and Sunday and expect that will be enough for the entire week, it doesn’t work like that. You have to plan your workouts and treat them like something you can’t skip. Otherwise, with the way our lives are always so busy now, there’s a good chance that exercising will be replaced by some other task that seems more important at the time.

How is it to train athletes and celebrities?

The big difference in training celebrities versus athletes is that celebrities’ schedules are always changing. So the goal is getting them on a regular routine that they can maintain. I would say the goal of 85% of the celebrities that come to me is to be lean and fit and to have enough energy to go through their day. Obviously when the role that they are training for requires a specific look, we put more emphasis on the body parts needing particular work. I like to say that I train celebrities like athletes. When I train athletes, I tell them “You should always do a little better in training than when you are in a competition, always have more energy reserves”. I have worked with Mike Tyson, Michael Moorer and Vernon Forrest, all three World Champions in boxing. And, I like to train all of my athletes the way I worked with my boxers – planning for the twelve rounds, even if they win in one.
