RENAC: Renewable Energy for Everybody Through Renovated Power Grids

Energy professionals can now learn the crucial tools for the grid integration of renewable electricity and obtain certification for the first time.

BERLIN - Thursday, December 19th 2013 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE) As the share of renewable technologies in the total energy supply mix continuously increases, a growing effort to integrate these technologies into the electricity grids is crucial. To ensure that professionals working in this sector have the necessary know-how, the Renewables Academy (RENAC) is now offering a world first opportunity to become a “Certified ReGrid Manager” (CRGM). This new qualification covers topics on how to increase and improve integration of renewable energies into the electricity grid, as well as on how to support the efficient transportation of energy to consumers, and on how to improve the reliability of renewable energy sources.

Power grids are facing a major transformation, driven by the need to integrate fluctuating electricity from renewables . Often, the electricity also has to be transported over large distances, since big wind or solar parks may be situated in remote areas. Participants learn how to avoid problems that can occur in the electrical system due to increased penetration of renewable energies. They also study measures designed to appropriately manage the system.

This new qualification is directed towards professionals in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Libya and Tunisia, who are working for ministries or administrations, electricity providers, grid operators, energy utilities, financing institutions or companies working in the renewables sector.

It has been developed as part of the ReGrid project (Capacity Building on Integration of Large Amounts of Renewable Energy into the Electricity Grids) by RENAC, based in Berlin, Germany. ReGrid is supported by the German International Climate Initiative, a programme of the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. RENAC has been providing a variety of training courses on the topic of grid integration since 2012. Already more than 280 professionals from the energy sector in the MENA region have received this training. This new certification has been developed as a result of feedback from a survey conducted with former ReGrid participants: 90% were interested in getting certification.

CRGM candidates will at first work through a special online course, learning how to run electricity systems with large amounts of wind and solar power, as well as how to manage company- and system-wide transformation processes to support large amounts of wind and solar power.

They will study power production scenarios from grid connected wind and solar parks. Topics covered are generator concepts for renewable generation, the prediction of wind and solar power, balancing power, grid codes for renewables, storage solutions and grid integration. The course will conclude with a final examination. Only candidates who pass this examination will receive the certificate. Application deadline for the online course is the 15th of February 2014.
